Reasons for Upgrading

Hi,
I currently own a Sony Vaio SZ 160P, which has a core 2 duo 1.83 ghz, 2 gigs of RAm and a 90 gb hard drive.
I'm thinking of buying the new T400/500 (I don't know how large I want to get it at)
Currently my computer does all my basic functions such as surfing the web, email, etc. but for work and school some times I have to run virtual machines in order to do some of the enterprise software that I'm working with.
I was wondering do you think it would be worth the upgrade to a new laptop (T400/500)? I had this laptop for about 2 years and a few months.
I've looked into the benefits, but I don't know if it'll be worth it quite yet. I just wanted to see what other people's opinions and reasons for buying a new laptop.
