Replacement Hard Disk Drive Compatibility

I was just wandering what replacement hard-disk drive would be compatible with the T400/T500 series.

2.5'', SATA, 5400/7200RPM is what I've got so far. Do you need a HDD with a sensor in it for the Active Protection System to work or is that separate?

Would be grateful to heard anyone's experiences with specific brands and models. I'm looking for a 160/200GB 7200RPM hard drive.

Thank-you.

I those are the only requirements. And...uh...isn't the Active Protection System separate from the HDD itself?

Yeah it's a set (or just one) accelerometer somewhere in the computer that detects sudden accelerations.

This is a good one...

HITACHI Travelstar 7K200 HTS722020K9SA00 (0A50940) 200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

or if you want huge...

And yes, the protection system is built into the computer. It will work with any hard drive.

Thanks for clarifying things. I'm not going to get a T400 for a little while but I wanted to get a compatible HDD to put in a caddy and then install when I get it. I'll get the Hitachi one I think.

Thanks again.

I put a Western Digital Scorpio Black 250GB 7200rpm drive in my T400 and it's been working great. Silent, cool, fast -- all you could ask for.

I put a Hitachi Travelstar 320 GB 7200 RPM in mine that's been nothing short of excellent.

No need to replace

Hi I had snags with my T400 and a friend sent me to this site and I got it all sorted there, give it a go before spending tons of cash on new parts http://www.user-guides.co.uk

On a follow-up point, does anyone know if the Hitachi Travelstar 200GB 7200RPM with Bulk Data Encryption, can have it's encryption turned off? Thanks.

Don't set a HDD password.

I don't have any personal experience with this drive but from what I read, the only way to make it not encrypt anything is when you do not set the HD password.

Thanks for the information. I'm looking into Seagate now.

Edit: I've picked up a 'Seagate ST9200420ASG 200GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 16MB Cache 7200rpm G-FORCE - OEM' along with an Icy Box IB-266 HDD caddy for it.

Thanks for all your help. When I upgrade to a new Thinkpad (Pfft rubbish keyboard on the T400) hopefully it will work beautifully.

Thanks for all your help everyone.
