Hi,
We just purchased a couple T400s (2.8GHz - T9600) for work and I just wanted to know if these units are plagued with the same "CPU whine" as the T61s?
Thanks....

How does it work?
I own T61p with T9300 and haven't noticed anything strange ?

Yes, whining is already recognised by an owner.
It seems to come from the DVD region near the screen.

Thanks, I understand now.
I haven't experienced this problem on my T61p (Vista Ultimate 64) cause I use the 'maximum performance' power plan for the whole time.
I had such an experience with my previous HP's, Dell's, Maxdata - always after instaling Flash Player or Java (don't know why).
I noticed that it I could hear the whinning just on 'Always on' power plan in XP Pro - I created exactly the same plan as 'Always on' but with a different name and the whinning stopped! Quite strange thing but worked on all my previous laptops.

To fix this, go to the BIOS, then to power management, and look for two options at the bottom. They should say something about PCI bus throttling and CPU bus throttling. Disable those two options.
My T22 had this problem, as did my T60, and even my new T400.

No need to disable the speedstep, it would drain the battery much faster. Just disable C3 state and you can always enable it when you need extra battery.
