T400 cannot boot

#1 Post by meh » Thu Sep 18, 2008 11:38 pm

I just got my T400 yesterday - used it for a day, then noticed this evening that the fans started blasting at full for no reason.

I then rebooted - and voila, "Fan error"!

Is there any help, or do I have to send it back? I only have EZServ warranty... And I've been waiting for almost a month for this laptop (order 08/20, recieved 09/17)

Edit: Ooook so it works now, after attempting to boot about 30 times... but is still blasting fans at random even though the CPU is around 30C.

I'll probably still send it back, but at least I have a machine that works right now.

Edit 2: I'm also not sure what will happen if I shut the machine down now - I'll just keep it in sleep until I have the time and/or guts to try again.

That sounds like a sensor error, or a logic problem in the BIOS.
Model: Lenovo ThinkPad T400
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26 GHz, 1067 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 Cache)
RAM: 4 GB PC-8500 (1067 MHz, Dual-channel)
HDD: 500 GB, 54000 RPM
Audio: Conexant CX20561 (192 kHz, 24-bit)
Video: Intel GMA 4500MHD
Wireless: Intel 5300

Try updating the BIOS with System Update (Start > Programs > ThinkVantage > System Update).

Fan error appears when the fan connector is disconnected, in this case maybe just bad connection?

If you remove the touchpad panel and keyboard (total of 5 screws), you should be able to see the fan connector next to the fan. Make sure it sits tight.

Thanks! Yeah, it appears to have been a bad connection - guess I was panicking for nothing then. After reseating the connector, no more error.

And even with the error - I didn't realize that you could bypass it by hitting Esc... I feel stupid now.

Never mind that.
So it's back, and Lenovo Canada says they don't have any parts to ship out. They'll be sending me an EZServ box.

I guess I'll ask them to look at things I overlooked earlier then:
- Left palmrest flex
- Headphone jack clicking noise
- Not-so-great keyboard
