New T400 Problems

I'm sad to be asking these questions here, as I've expected somehow better performance from my new machine :(
So, if anybody knows what to do with any of these things:

- Start-up is just too slow for a new fresh system. What could it be?
- Laptop sometimes (pretty often) doesn't shut down and stays on the "shutting down" screen. Reset required.
- Hibernating takes extremely long. I know that 3GB RAM is somehow more than the 1GB I've used to have in my old T43 but now I also have the 7.2k HDD so I wouldn't expect to be waiting *so* long.
- Problems when switching the graphics: When switching from "energy saving" to "high performance", the screens starts to blink and stays like that, reset required; when I tried it then vice-versa, nothing happens.
- Sometimes (in game) the screen freezes, after while blackens out and comes back again. Windows show then the notice that the display driver collapsed and recovered.
- Is there some utility to find out what application accesses the HDD? Just now I've started the laptop, doing nothing on it (i'm typing from a another one) and the HDD usage is crazy up. Is it the indexing...?

I would like to install fresh Vistas but I haven't got the installation DVD with my laptop. (not that it would matter because just a few days later, my whole travel bag got stolen - inclusive all the documents, xp-downgrade DVDs, docking station, cables,...)

I would appreciate any hints to these points (maybe I'll add some more later, I'm sure I've forgotten something).
Thanks!

I´m sorry to hear about your troubles and I hope that you will restore your loss without much of further troubles!
Regarding system start-up and shut down times your install is new, but not really fresh... All this Lenovo preloaded software is well-known for causing troubles like these (God, my experience with Lenovo preloaded XP install was a nightmare...), so in a sense it´s normal what you experience , but not normal for a new machine in any case (my opinion). From my experience, "tweaking" the OS in a Lenovo image won´t really solve your problems. As you say yourself, you need a fresh Vista (or XP) install. And as a mathematician to a mathematician let me know if you need a Vista install DVD (only 64bit though) ;)

Problem is, I cannot get any english Vistas from my friends here in Austria. I could buy (grmpf, why do I have to buy again something that I already have?!) a student-version of vista but I'm not sure if I would get the same system (for ex. if it's even possible to put a normal license in the OS installed from the student media)..

Just got my first BSOD: "No more irp stack locations"
What the hell does that mean? Happened just after new start of the system, trying to open total commander...

Unplug your USB flash drive or USB hard drive and reboot.

The only plugged USB device is/was a standard mouse...
