T500 workng with Dell 5720 internal Mini PCI Card w/Drivers

#1 Post by NIN2001 » Sat Dec 06, 2008 10:14 pm

I have a client that has all sprint cards and asked if I could get an internal for the T500 system they just got. I did some research and saw it had an internal WWAN slot. After reading this site and seeing that there was a hack to allow the card to initialize I now just needed to find the drivers and software to run it.

Well just as you would think Dell won't let their software install on anything other than a dell and Novatel doesn't list the drivers on their site because the card is for Dell only, yeah, not anymore ;)

I extracted the drivers from the install package and got the card to install now all I needed was to find a working connection manager. It took 5 tries but I found one that worked! Called Sprint and activated the card and well it works perfectly.

I will put it up all the files for download at www.NRSTech.com/dlfiles/T500Dell5720.zip

Enjoy!
Nick

P.S. None of this would have been possible without Zander and his BIOS update.
Fun is in the eye of the beholder ;)

This also works with X200

Thank you so much for the drivers. I have now a fully working DELL Sprint 5720 Mobile Broadband Card EVDO XM359 on a ThinkPad X200, activated with Sprint.

Old thread but I'd like to clarify a couple of points. I can install this in any X200 and it will have the antenna's already built in?

I need to use a Telus version of the dell card, will the above drivers/software work with that version?

Any other options for a wwan card? I know lenovo shipped the X61 with a telus WWAN option. Can I not just find the FRU and order that?

Thanks,
Dave

To answer at least some of your questions.
Yes it will work, at least, on most x200's they have two pairs of double antennas built in.
However, if you add in a WiMax card, you might need to add a third antenna on one of the slots. It's somewhat painful to do but is definitely feasable on your own.
If the driver works for other cards than the one described, I have to say maybe, but most likely not. You probably need to "hack" another driver to be found on the manufacturers site, here you can also find the info of what drivers are included in this particular package. The "hacks fairly simple, but you need access to a DELL box. The packed file you obtain from DELL's site is testing if you are working on a DELL machine when you decompress it. Once the decompression is done, you can just copy these files and use them on any other manufacturers machine.
Good Luck,

I'm trying to get my dell 5720 sprint card recognized by a X200 modified bios. Windows recognizes new hw is installed and tried to get the drivers so I need the right driver. Tried downloading the dell driver but dell software checks to see if dell hw is being used. I also tried the connection mgr that was posted by NIN2001 but it doesn't work for me. I get 'insert your device...' message. http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopi ... nt#p477258

using win64 but dont think that matters since the drivers are 64 compatible.

please help! thanks

thanks a ton for posting the drivers. Installed successfully.

One question - how to get the GPS functionality working?

what you need to do is d/l the Dell Mobile Broadband Card Utility. Run the install, when it fails (don't click OK or anything) find the temp directory in /documents and settings/username/localsettings and copy to the desktop. Will have something like the above utility name.msi

Use Orca from the MS Windows SDK to remove rows containing "not a dell compatible" (should be 3). Click options, enable save all streams on save as, then run the .msi - it should install. Change GPSHWSetup to 1 in the registry, run the dell software. Should come up and have a GPS button across the top. It should also let you connect to Verizon or whoever if you have an account (ie, have registered the ESN with them).

Doing all this (a major pain), I get the WWAN light on the laptop to follow the behavior of the card using the Dell utility, but FN+F5 doesn't show the WWAN.
