Brand new T400 - sleep issues

No not my sleep, but the computer's sleep.'
Originally, when the computer would go into sleep, I could not "wake" it. I held the power button, pressed the Fn button, Fn+F4, esc, touchpad - nothing worked. I had to force-shut off the computer via the power button and then restart.
I thought I solved the problem by tinkering with the power manager. Fn+F4 worked at putting it to sleep and awaking it. However, it still manages to fall into an unrecoverable sleep after being idle for a while.
The second problem: I noticed that the first night I left it on (but assumed to be in sleep mode since I closed the lid), I woke up the next day to find the computer's 9-cell battery drained from 100% to 20%. My T42, which was under the same conditions, only lost 25% of its power (75% remaining). I thought it was weird but wasn't sure b/c I couldn't remember if teh T400 actually went into sleep mode (I didnt see the crescent moon light up).
Today, I noticed it in sleep mode signified by the crescent moon but the fan was running quite loudly blowing hot air out. What gives?? I'm beginning to think something is wrong with my computer's ability to sleep. Tinkering in Power manager and window's power settings....there doesn't seem to be anything that can address this issue. I have settings on Energy Saver with Fn designated to resume from standby, and to go into stand by once the lid is closed. I have no option for hibernation activated.
I really hope I don't have a faulty computer....
Thanks in advance for any and all help. [/i]
