How can I get Catalyst 8.12 drivers on my T400?

#1 Post by jdbuckeye2009 » Sat Dec 20, 2008 4:09 pm

I've been playing Fallout 3 lately, and I've noticed that it keeps crashing periodically (sometimes after 2 hours, sometimes after 10 minutes), and apparently it's a problem with the switchable graphics driver provided by lenovo.

My question is, is there any way to keep the switchable graphics driver installed, but update the catalyst version to 8.12 via ATI's official driver page? I tried modding them with Driverheaven's Mobility Modder, and they installed, but afterwards my video drivers were all screwed up and only the integrated graphics worked. Has anybody gotten this to work properly?

Try extracting the drivers out and running the setup.exe in the \Driver\CCC folder. I don't think this will help though, since I am having the crashing problem on XP and have heard reports from others, and mobility modder doesn't seem to be working right on the new Catalyst for anyone, so don't feel bad.

You'll need to use a tool called Mobility Modder... Download normal 8.12 desktop driver for your gpu, extract to standard folder (eg. C:\ATI...) and point the program to that directory...

I think he tried that. Mobility modder does not appear to be compatible with 8.12.

Yeah, just noticed that :/ ... Anyways, modding 8.12 does work for regular laptops, haven't tried on T400 though ...

I have the sam problems with T500.. I think it's a problem because of the switchable graphics driver.

Nevertheless can sum1 check the 8.11? or try uninstall the switchable graphics driver first

that sucks that the 8.12's are faulty. Maybe I'll try using mobility modder on the 8.11's.

I am suspecting that it has something to do with the switchable graphics driver though. Does anybody know if there is a general purpose, non-OEM version of graphics switching drivers? I know a couple of manufacturers use the ATI + Intel switchable graphics platform, I wonder if Intel made a general set of drivers for them?

I don't think so, I've been looking since XP doesn't work with it. As I've said, I get the crashes too, and I don't have one. You could try disabling switchable graphics to test. Try with both the Intel and ATI cards only. The switchable driver just manages the other display drivers, so you shouldn't have a problem running without it, or with custom drivers in the displays. Keep in mind that I don't use Vista though, so I'm just taking guessing and suggesting trials.
