Pre-Loaded Software for T-400

#1 Post by wwwalker2 » Tue Dec 23, 2008 9:33 am

I recently purchased a T-400 and tried both XP and Vista 32. Each comes with many preloaded applications/services, several of which are explicitly labeled for Thinkpad. In either operation system, which of these are nonessential? Which can I disable or uninstall to improve performance?

Pick and choose what you need. I have most of the ThinkPad software installed (Not R&R and Not Client Security) and none of what is installed causes any performance problems at all. Just like my XP machines, Vista Business 64-bit runs at less than 2% CPU more than 98% of the time. .... JDH

I don't have Client Security installed as well. Is there any reason you didn't install R&R though? I find it backup/recovery capability could come in handy at times.

Which do you prefer, and why?

I not sure yet. Just testing VISTA now. So far no problems with it. I found a big performance boost in an excel application with Vista vs. XP but not sure why. See other topic...

I keep my email on two machines, my documents in two Windows Briefcases (i.e., on two machines) and my file store replicated via Total Commander on two machines. The desktop has a large second drive for archival storage including much of what is on the main drive.

I don't think I need R&R on top of it. I don't want my drive usage doubled for it to back up what is already well backed up.

There are lots of Vista threads by now that you should check out with people offering their viewpoints on XP and Vista. .... JDH

There are numerous ways of doing backup and recovery on any computer system.

If you don't have some other method already worked through, R&R is an OK tool for the purpose, but if you do.... R&R only has nuisance value.
