System Update consistently fails

Anybody having a problem where System Update consistently fails?
Every time I run it, it gets to a list of things to download or update.
Whatever I do next (click to view details on an item, or click to start updating), I get the following:
ThinkVantage System Update has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
In the error log, I see:
.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)
I have both uninstalled and reinstalled System Update, and uninstalled and reinstalled all the .NET packages on my system, to no avail.
Anybody see this before, and fix it?
