All my experience + understanding down the drain.
Lenovo support centre informs me that their T400 consumes power even in hibernate mode and it is natural !.
Please comment , so that i can collect the wisdom of more seasoned thinkpad users and wisen myself.
I happen to be in Mumbai,India. Lenovo's support desk is at Banglore and it takes a lot of tries to get them
to try to help you.

Unlike suspend to RAM, suspend to disk (hibernation) is not supposed to drain any power. However, if hybrid sleep is enabled, it´s a combination of suspend to disk and suspend to RAM, which would then drain power. Hence I don´t think that it´s normal for any recent laptop to drain power while in hibernation (that would indicate some problem with the particular machine or design flaw, but not really design intention).

The problem of laptop consuming power while in hibernate (which is not normal) has been seen on many different laptops. There is a long thread on it here somewhere (I think someone with an X61 reported it, and immediately got replies from other people encountering it on other laptops).

The LAN device is often to blame, and the solution is to disable all the various wake features in the BIOS and the driver. However, sometimes there are other causes.
