T400 Ordering Question

#1 Post by ian12345 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:39 pm

I am ready to order a T400 as sone as the LED backlight option is available again. Can someone give me the pros and cons of disc encryption on the hard drive. I get that it is safer if someone steals my PC. But does it slow the hard drive down?

Full disc encryption as implemented on the new ThinkPads does not affect, or slow down hard drive performance. The key reason is simply to further elevate the level of security offered. Here is a link that will answer any additional questions.

Judging by the drive in W500 that I'm typing this on, no slowdown there, not that I can tell-in any which way, shape or form.

I have to disagree. With HD encryption turned on, HD intensive tasks like compressing, archiving, copying of large files, video converting perform worse (my 7K200 comes with the option for HD encryption), sometimes even noticeably worse...
