What Hard Drive would you buy today for your T-400?

A rather cheap ssd as T400 is silent anyway, it would be completely silent with a sdd. But I do not need lots of space. It depends what you want to do.

I will get a high performance SSD.
such as 120G vertex, 250G vertex and 256G Samsung.
Coz T400/T500 does support SATA3.0Gb/s, unlike my X61t and T60.

You have an Intel X-25M-80G For Sale which also makes a great hdd for this system.

I second all suggestions about the SSDs. I would say that T400 is so nice machine that it would be almost a shame to use anything else with performance worse than the performance of the current mainstream SSDs Also, the current high-performance laptop HDs have very good throughputs (for the fact that they are mechanical 2.5'' drives), but terrible seek times in real-life, which IMO simply steals from the performance a machine like T400 is capable of

Agreed. If/when the 7200rpm HD goes south in my T400 it will be getting the latest SSD.

Ok with that said what brand SSD? are they all the same? I see they are big $$$$$ for a hard drive.

OCZ, Samsung, Intel... But which model? That rather depends on your budget.

SSD technology for laptops has not yet reached maturity.

The risk trade off is not generally acceptable, unless you have a highly specific need for some attrribute that only an SSD can provide, as a mitigating factor.

I agree with bill bolton that SSDs are still not very mature technology. The recent articles about problems with the Intel SSDs, or the issues with OCZ SSDs, the partition alignment tweak for XP or all the Vista tweaks for SSDs actually prove this. Nevertheless, with SSDs getting cheaper and cheaper the real performance gain can IMHO outweigh some of the disadvantages of this non-mature state of SSDs. The only real problem is the danger of almost (if not entirely) unrecoverable data loss in case the SSD should fail. Apart from this, I, personally, could live with any tweaks or hacks that need to be applied to achieve optimal performance out of a SSD...

Both Intel and OCZ vertex works perfect on my X61t, I only did tweak to turn off superfetch ect. its not hard way to do it.
SSD saves power, and its fast, even on my non-sata3.0gb/s X61t.
I have no problem to do photoshop, Autocad on my laptop.

I don´t want to state anything bad, but I think time will tell if your SSDs will or will not have any problems... Regarding battery life, I believe it´s actually not clear if SSDs really make it longer. Some do, others not so. There are even articles in favor of the opposite statement

I could not agree more. After having first hand experience with both the top of the line OCz and Samsung models, I find they are simply not ready for prime time. As an early adopter I knew that I would pay handsomely to try these out, and while it was fun and I'm still using the Samsung, I will not be implementing these on my other current models anytime soon.

I use a samsung ssd more than one year and its quality is outstanding. It makes my old computer very snappy and fast. It was extremely expensive, though.

The nice thing about this Samsung SSD is that it´s not so expensive anymore So, those who haven´t get any by now may start considering one... I also believe it´s a SLC SSD, that seems to make quite a difference. Unlike with MLC SSDs I haven´t heard of any problems with the SLC SSDs (from the good brands of course). And from your experience one can assume that it has already been put in the test of time. That´s IMO one more plus in favor of getting it.

It is slc and it is faster compared in everything. I did not tweak vista in any way, I just noticed a few days ago that there are forums where users share "os tweaks for ssds" topics. This is not needed for this samsung ssd. My ssd even survived an overvolt attac in x40, it melted but is still working!

True, I remember reading your post about the SSD melting... If this had happened to me, I would probable have freaked out I wouldn´t even assume that such thing is possible. It´s amazing though that it´s still working. I hope it works longer for you.

Exactly my point, all these OS "tweaks" apply to the OCZ MLC SSDs...
