I would be grateful if somebody could tell me (sorry for my ignorance) what the following port is for on my W500 (apologise my ignorance) and what devices (camcorder? TV? Beamer?) could be connected?:

it looks i am even too stupid too correctly post a link or image...

secondly, I have been a pretty happy T42p, T43p, T60p and T61p user (all 14.1"). A few weeks ago my new W500 arrived. I think I have never been so disappointed with a Thinkpad. Display quality mediocre. performance is not better than T61p's. Often "hanging" for 20 to 30s. Any similar experiences? It's the 4061-32G model with Intel T9800 2.93GHz Core 2 Duo and 3GB of RAM, but running XP.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

That is a Display Port. Generally, it's a display port (well...). Output only, video only (audio not included), devices include mostly external monitors, though some high-end beamer/projectors might be compatible.

As for performance, I can't speculate what might be causing them, but any 20 second hang-ups are not going to be caused by hardware unless you have a faulty (dying) hard drive.

Other than that, unless you are running some demanding programs, at some point performance under XP is going to plateau as processes stop being CPU- or RAM-bound. Can you elaborate on your problems?

thanks qviri for your instant feedback! actually, the hangups even occur when running just a browser with lenovo.com and nothing else running... well... I'll see... do I need some kind of HDMI cable for this display out then, right? thanks!

Actually, HDMI and DisplayPort (proper name is without the space -- sorry) are not mutually compatible. You'd need a DisplayPort cable.

As for the hang-ups, what happens during the problems? Can you open up Task Manager, set it to stay on top, open up Processes tab and sort it by CPU usage to see if something is hogging the CPU? Does your HDD indicator LED light up or stay lit during these hang-ups, or do you hear the hard drive seeking (chattering) a lot?
