Possible CPU issue

I have a T400 that I bought refurbished from the Lenovo Outlet this spring. The laptop came with Vista but I quickly got rid of it and installed XP and Ubuntu on it and am still running that setup. I have been noticing hesitations in the system when I'm doing everyday computing. These hesitations are accompanied by a high-pitch whine that gets progressively higher in frequency until the noise stops. When the noise stops the systems resumes what it was doing. The length of time the system stays frozen can vary between 1 second and about 30 seconds. The problem doesn't appear to be linked to any particular software, including the OS. I experience the same things in both Windows and Linux.

I have tried disabling power management in both the bios and in the operating system, and it seemed to help some, the freeze-ups happen less often, but it is still a problem. I think there has been a bios update released since I got the laptop, but I am not sure if that would really help anything.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be going on? Anyone else experience anything like this? If it is a hardware issue that can be repaired I would like to get it fixed while under warranty.

Model 2764
Core 2 Duo 9400
2 GB of RAM
GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
Hitachi hts722020k9sa00 200 GB 7200 RPM HDD

Thanks...

Welcome to the Thinkpads.com forums. Pull the hard drive and run an Ubuntu live CD for awhile. If the noise goes away the hard drive is defective.
