Hi

I want to upgrade my t400 (type 7417-CTO) from p8600 to p9500 processor, is it possible at all? Will I run into any issues like overheating or problems with compatiblity? Thanks!

I don't reason it would fail to work, but unless you're doing CPU intensive tasks all the time, I don't know maybe you are, investing in a faster hard drive or SSD is probably money better spent. Stuff like Office, Internet and movies, don't really push the CPU enough where you'd be able to discern a difference.

I agree. The T2500 in my Dell performs similarly (for what I do) as the P8400 in my T400, considering how much more advanced the P8400 is. The gap between the P9500 and the P8600 is much smaller, so I doubt you are going to see a worthwhile improvement for the amount of money you'll be paying. RAM and HDD upgrades are a lot more worthwhile. Also, I'm not sure if upgrading the CPU will void the warranty.

Sure it would work, it's just you'll only get very marginal performance gains, despite paying for a brand new processor. Both CPUs have the TDP of 25W at full load, so there won't be overheating AFAIK.

Gone to be very hard to notice the real world benefit - of 0.13 Ghz and 3mb extra cache. Unless you sit around all day, editing video on a 14 inch laptop, or run CPU intensive app. In which case, something like T9600 @ 2.8 - would be a real upgrade.

Hay Eagle, nice to see you here.
