New T400 on the way!

#1 Post by ryan1212 » Thu Sep 03, 2009 7:03 pm

I just ordered a T400 from the outlet for $650
Intel® Core™2 Duo P8600
14.1” WXGA+ (1440 X 900) TFT
AMD M82XT Switchable Graphics 256MB

It only is coming with an 80gb hard drive. I am wondering, can I use any SATA harddrive, or is it like the T43's with a boot error when you use a non FRU hard drive?

Also, what is the cheapest dock that will give me a DVI out?

I was going to wait for the T410 and the new intel mobile platform, but decided I would not be able to get a T410 with similar specs at that price for several months. Most of the enhancements seem to do with battery life. Decided to take the plunge :)

Although I am likely selling my T40, my first thinkpad, I am going to miss it...
X201 3625-F5U: i5-m540, 6gb Ram
X60 1709-H6U: T7200, 3gb Ram
T400 2767-RB2: P8600, 4GB Ram, Switchable Graphics, WXGA+
T40 2373-75U Pentium M 1.5ghz, 1 GB Ram, XGA

The T43 uses PATA drives. The drive from your T400 wont work. It's SATA. You might want to pick up the modular hard drive caddy and use the drive for backups.

The cheapest dock with DVI is the Advanced Mini Dock. You can probably get a used one in the $70-80 range.

One generation to the next is usually not that great a leap in performance, but maybe they'll surprise us this time. You could argue the lower wattage CPUs in this generation, which offer better battery life, is a pretty big step up for this round.

Congrats on the machine.
