12.5mm hard drive?

#1 Post by xxPaulCPxx » Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:09 pm

Out of curiosity...

I am about to jump into Win 7, and since I'm doing a fresh install I'll be using a fresh drive. The biggest one out is... well... BIG.

WD had a 1TB laptop drive, but it is 12.5mm instead of the 9.5mm that most laptops (T400 included) use.

However... the T400 uses those rubber mounting pads.

Would a 12.5mm drive fit without those rubber socks around it?

Waiting for the T450... sooooonnnnnn...

The rubber rails make the drive wider so no a 12.5 mm will not fit.

You should be able to get a Hitachi 500Gb 7200-rpm 9.5mm drive. That will fit. ... JDH

I've got a 500GB drive that is already nearly full... I need that space!

Put it in the Ultrabay if you don't need the optical much.

OK, but does that have 12.5mm space... and can you boot from it?

I would be inclined to chip my documents out of a rock before ever again running anything less than 7200-rpm. The speed shows up in my daily work (having used 5400-rpm drives and 7200-rpm drives in the same T41 XP Pro computer). I want the extra speed and will pay for the extra speed. YMMV

No, it doesn't.... it takes a 9.5mm thick HDD only.

That WD drive is NOT intended for mobile applications, and you'd probably destroy it fairly quickly if you try to use it in for that purpose.

I have the 5400RPM drive in my new T400 and it is painfully slow. I'm waiting for a good deal on Hitachi hard drives to come up again. Last year I bought 3x 320GB 7200RPM for $60(Canadian) and 2x 320GB 7200RPM for $50(Canadian). Hitachi rebates used to rule.

yes, the 9mm SSD fits in the X220

Hitachi 500Gb 7200-rpm drives are not yet on the market in the vendor channel, so I have ordered a 500Gb 7200-prm Seagate drive. It has received good reviews, so I shall take one for a spin. It is for the copy of Windows 7 that I also ordered. ... JDH
