Can someone figure out the display ratio from those pics please?
Is it 16:10 or (yuk) 16:9?

Copying one of the images into Paint Shop Pro and cropping out the display, the screen size is 377 x 240. Or a ratio of 1.57. So I'd say you're looking at a 16:10 panel.

Does it have HDMI on the back in addition to VGA? It's hard to tell from the photo.

illuminated keyboard would have been nice...

wonder when lenovo will finally adopt them. i don't see too much value in them as a touch typist but they do look very cool in darkened rooms - apple gets a lot of mileage out of illuminated keyboard in their macbook pros

From the renders it appears the latching screen is gone.

Sheesh. Just got my 400s a few days ago. What's upgraded in the forthcoming 410s?

<OK, a little research and I see it's a proc upgrade to Calpella. I'd have waited if I'd known... but this thing is pretty fast so I guess I'll live. Trying to convince myself it's not worth the hassle of returning a brand new machine and waiting 75 days...>

There will always be something newer just over the horizon. Thats the nature of the computer business. Your T400s is still an awesome computer. Just enjoy it.

Furthermore, the reasons for choosing the laptop you have now, have not suddenly changed - the choice you made is still a good one ;)

Of course there is always something better coming - but in my case there was not great urgency now as opposed to 60 days from now, and I do make an effort to purchase early in lifecycle. Buying 45 days before a pretty major component upgrade does really disappoint me - and I did make some effort to check if a revision was coming although clearly not a good enough effort as the 'roadmap' slides have been apparently online since July. I also asked around after the recent spate of Intel planning leaks, but didn't catch that this new high end laptop chip was coming.

I bought this thing for pure speed and convenience. I went for the upgraded proc speed, 4Gigs, SSD, built-in verizon card, pretty much every option they had. For $2600 (or more if it would have been more) I want the fastest thing I could get (traded off with the killer size and other build attributes). So to find out that what is probably a way better processor base version could be in my hands in mid-late Jan (assuming) isn't a non-event.

Yes my brand new 401s is great and fast and best available today, but really I feel like my new car has a scratch - I just can't look at it the same way as yesterday. I'm still wrestling with a possible return (and 15% restocking fee I assume) or just holding on. Probably I"ll keep it - but not sure yet.

The points you guys make are right for most people most of the time. But there is a difference in buying something a) without caring what's coming next (knowing it's inevitable), b) without makign an effort to find out when/what's coming next, and c) caring & trying & getting clipped with info after 4 days. It bugs me.

(To be clear, I don't blame anyone but myself for not researching harder - the info was out there. I'm not upset with Lenovo for example, just disappointed that it turned out this way.)

It has a Display Port.

Overall it's a nice machine. Clean design, large TouchPad (for those who use it), good connectivity options. I don't like the absence of the screen latch and some ports could be moved to the left side to improve accessibility.

:( I couldn't first believe this - I had to look at the pictures repeatedly and pinch myself that it was for real - don't know - but i get a feel that slowly the once quality days of the thinkpads are waning- i guess its just a matter of time another manufacturer beating the so called quality of thinkpads that will stop people coming to these once high class machines. Hope i am wrong, as i am a big fan myself(with a z61t), but just couldn't contain the feelings when i saw that the latch was gone. I was actually waiting the last couple of months for T410s and now i am not so excited about it.

Maybe I'll hope that lenovo has an option to get the calpella chips in a T400s and I will be glad to purchase it.

I'd suggest waiting to see how whatever they used to replace it (magnet, probably) works in practice before weeping for the latch.

Change is going to happen, and not all change is bad; for what it's worth, lots were decrying the Z-series as the consumer materialistic Lenovo-facilitated downfall of the ThinkPad.

I wish I could get a T4xx class machine without the touchpad. Seems like a lot of wasted space.

The Japanese T40 came without a touchpad, I wonder if the T400 is the same?

The last new Thinkpad I bought was an x30. A few weeks after that purchase the x31 came out. I was bummed, but it didn't last. The x30 did. It was primary machine for six and half years. I don't expect any less from my new t400s.

I see that Engadget picked up on the T410's twin ThinkLights yesterday:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/leno ... inklights/

Most of the comments on Engadget's article debate ThinkLights vs backlit keyboards. I guess all those MacBook users are still in denial ;-)

having used both thinkpads and apples, i think that backlit keyboard is more of an esthetic feature than functional. i would not mind if thinkpad adopts them provided the keyboard action is not changed

since they already revised the keyboard layout in T400s, i don't see why backlit keyboard cannot be offered as an option. i am sure that there will be enough adoptees if it is priced reasonably.

it will spice up the thinkpads up a bit and another reason to stay with ibm selectric style over chiclet style keyboard that is becoming popular

We all know the feeling you get when your new LT is "bettered/updated" in some way.
As soon as it arrives UPS/DHL it is superceded. But that's a fact of life.

You just have to get over it.
Sometimes I rationalize the improvement is not that big of a deal or important. I don't need it.
Or, the thing will slow things down a lot.

Hello

i found also the leak out page, with the new few features, 2 more USB Ports a twinlight
and some another things. helpfull yes,

But why [deleted] forget (by the way), on the T400s and now on the T410s a 1394 connector.

Also why the keybord is not yet illuminated you can save or do extra the Tinklight

I hope the new T410 comes with an e-Sata

so I'm curious about two things:

1) why are connectors/ports on the rear of the system "bad" ???

2) given the answer to #1 -- where else would you suggest that the designers put said ports? I can count somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-15 different "ports" or "connectors" or whatever that go on the edges of a modern laptop... and there are only so many ways you can connect them... I suppose if you were willing to move the optical drive to the rear you could probably find enough space for most of the other connectors... but I don't see this being a realistic gripe for the most part... is there something I'm missing?

I believe it has to do with where the battery's going to go as well as thermal management. What options does that leave for the battery? The type where it raises the laptop up. I prefer the ones that stick out at the back (despite many people's complaints. It's better to have the option of a larger battery available in my opinion).
