I'm sorry if this is an obvious thing to you but I was unable to find a direct answer to this anywhere in the forum or internet...
Does the ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III support SATAII drives or just SATA??
Thanks in advance!

Since that adapter was designed for ThinkPad R400, R500, T400s, T400, T500, W500, and W700, it makes sense that it would support the same drives that those machines do (SATA and SATA II). I don't think you will find written specs out on the Net because Lenovo themselves do not give it out. If you can find a benchmarek/review that would be an indicator as far as read/write transfer rates.

Yeah, I'd suppose that too but I'm no hardware expert.

Does that mean, that the SATAII drives are backward compatible, e.g. the worst scenario for me would be that the SATAII drive will run on a SATA speed? I just don't want to download a drive that wouldn't work at all

Yes SATA II is backward compatible with SATA,
I just don't want to download a drive ...
Some day over a beer maybe you can explain to me how to 'download a drive'

.
