Thinkpad T400 - Clean Reinstall? Drivers?

#1 Post by squarecnix » Sat Dec 26, 2009 1:22 am

Hi guys,

I just bought a new lenovo thinkpad t400 and It came with windows 7 64 bit home premium. (I have only 2gb of RAM but i plan on adding more later).

My question is, today I have upgraded using windows anytime upgrade to get to windows 7 ultimate , (which i already had).

But im wondering If i should still do a fresh install? In my experience fresh installs have always been better much faster etc...

AND if I do this fresh install, how hard will it be to find ALL my lenovo drivers and utilities and install them properly? I want all my Fn buttons to work properly and the green notifications to pop up on screen when I use them, etc etc.. But in the past I have clean installed laptops and found I lost use of the Fn buttons which was more than enraging.

So my first question 1) is do you guys think I should just be happy with the ultimate 64 bit upgrade I did? Or fresh install?

2) which browser is the best? On my beast PC at home core i7 OC@ 4.0ghz 6gb ram gtx260 and more I dont want to type, Chrome works terribly for some reason, but IE and FF work EXCELLENTLY. on Chrome Pages wont load sometimes I have to push go twice or three times but on my netbook which is obviously MUCH slower and less powerful chrome works well! So for my thinkpad in your opinion?

Maybe you want to see how it goes with your upgrade before you take the plunge. You can always do a clean install later if you want. All of the software installed on your machine, including the apps and drivers, is located in the SWTools folder on the C:\ drive. They may not be the latest version, but you can download those on Lenovo's website or use System Update. If you do a clean install you need to install the System Interface and Hotkey drivers, in that order, to get the on screen displays.

I use FF, mainly for the customization. They all seem about the same to me.

yea im using the new beta FF now. Nice browser i love it.

But hey man I got bluetooth on my TP and I cant seem to find a way to use it. I type bluetooth in the start menu search bar it shows bluetooth but I click it and nothing happens. There is a bluetooth light next to my wireless indicator on the actual monitor but it does nothing.

This and I cannot seem to find the card reader which I asked to be installed as well..

I'm using the Minefield nightly :P
A bit off topic, but do you find that Firefox crashes really often when using the Ultranav (especially scrolling?).

I think if you turn on Bluetooth using Fn+F5, you'll get a little BlueTooth icon in the system tray from which you can connect to any of your BlueTooth devices. I don't use my BT very often, but that's what seems to be the way it works.

Hey Colonel

I dont think ive ever had the freezing/crashing issue. hmm.. try downloading the newest FF? Im using the beta one. and ill try your Bluetooth Fn key thing

I see your sig says satisfied t400 owner.
One question I have to ask which I just found out about last night which infuriated me: the t400 led backlit 1440x900 webcam.

the webcam on this t400 absolutely sucks. a 1/10 easily. Crazy white balance. Ridiculously dark. Reddish/Yellowish tents. And it seems to be a problem others have.
I have the intel 4500MHD. Do you know anyway to fix this? I really hope I dont have to go through lenovo. This PC is less than a week old, and I fear if I send it back, they'll f*ck something else up!

This problem is much more important than my original question. lol lets switch gears a bit
