T500 and WWAN once again

#1 Post by stricte » Sat Jan 02, 2010 7:22 pm

hi all

this is my first post at this forum, so firstly welcome all

i bought 2 weeks ago my first thinkpad t500, model 2082-BPG. impressions are very good except keybord (left side has wird knocking) and screen (i saw better LCD panels, ie. DELL). but the question is where i can find some specs of my model or information about possibility to upgrade my laptop with wwan support. which of the wwan modems are compatible with? or maybe there is no chance to do this? unfortunelly i forgot to check wwan ready options while buying :(

P.S. sorry for my english

Product: ThinkPad T500 2082-BPG
Operating system: All
Original description: P8700(2.53GHz), 2GB RAM, 320GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 256MB ATI Radeon HD3650, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 9c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 32

WWAN upgradeable is not mentioned in the specs or in the maintenance manual. The parts manual lists separate parts for a WWAN capable LCD lid for example, so one could assume that it would not be included if not ordered. Check for a SIM card slot in the battery compartment. If it is there then you also need to check for the antennas. Use the maintenance manual.

Ok. thanks for a response.

There is no sim card slot and antenna.
But I think there wont be any problem with upgrade my laptop with this staff (am i wrong?). Question from my first post is still actual: how to check which 3g modem will be working with my laptop? If any.

There's no problem as long as you have the money for parts. You'll need a new lid, antennas, the card, and a sim holder. Any card listed in the T500 parts manual would technically work, but you need to see what access providers in your region support.

I was looking at what I thought was a T500 parts manual earlier, but it must have been something else. You do not need a new lid. Here's the parts manual for the antenna part#.

So, I see that most expensive part will be modem: SonyEricsson F3507g (is it good choice?), except of cours service work. I assume working myself with this will break warranty.

The F3507g supports 3G services on the 850/1900/2100 MHz bands. You need to make sure that this suits the 3G ISPs in your region.

It seems that the 850MHz band is not much used in Europe for 3G services, where the 900MHz and 2100MHz bands are more widely implemented for 3G services.

Cheers,

Bill B.
