Are you asking about a "flight mode", which is usually regarded as a no RF emission mode, or are you asking about powering from "at-seat" power outlets (where available)?
Re battery charging..... most airlines will not permit the explict charging of batteries "in-flight" (that is, using a visible battery charger), but as yet I have never had any flight crew challenge me about what my plugged-in laptop may be doing in terms of implicit charging of its battery while in operation from an external power source. YMMV
Cheers,
Bill

"Airplane Mode", as far as I know, does not exist in the power manager settings. If you wish to put the laptop into "Airplane mode" I would suggest switching the power setting to "Maximum Battery" and disabling all wireless radios you may have (press Fn + F5 and disable Wifi, Bluetooth, and WLAN).
Cheers

this i mean if your power suplly is connect it will automatic charge the battery but
dell have a software tool in his e6400series there you can stop charching if your battery charger is connected
will some one post this to lenovo to explain them this feature

interesting - i've never heard anything about the forbidding of charging batteries on a plane. i use a 12V - 110V converter all the time. Regardless, I've never seen anything in my t400 about the ability to run off AC but *not* charge the battery at the same time.
You could hack this behavior, however. In the Power Manager, you can set the level at which you want the battery to start charging (under the "Battery Maintenance" button). Thus, you could set it to something like 3%. If you then set your computer to hibernate when it hit 4%, you wouldn't be charging the battery, even when plugged into AC.

You can do this readily with a ThinkPad, through adjusting the charging thresholds in the ThinkVantage Power Manager. This has been the case for several years now.
