New T410 - doesn't see AC Adapter plugged in - ideas?

#1 Post by masterbeat » Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:50 pm

I have a new T410 and the battery charge indicator at the bottom of the screen won't go above 40%. It has been plugged in for over a day now, but sits at 40%. I did the battery 'reset' option where it is supposed to discharge and then recharge to reset this, but it's still doing the same thing after that excercise. In fact, before this exercise it was hovering at 41%.

Any ideas on how to get this to go back up to 100%? This is a brand new T410 and brand new battery. I'm curious, is the battery defective or the power manager software?

Ok, did some more investigation and realized the real problem is the system isn't seeing the AC adapter as being plugged in, which is why the battery indicator wasn't increasing. I did a battery reset, and then tried a new battery. Now the battery actually CHARGES, but the system still doesn't think the AC adapter is plugged in - yes, bizarre, it show the battery 'charging' but also shows running on battery power when the AC adapter is plugged in. There is no 'plug' icon in the tray or in the power manager. So I tried to update the BIOS (as the latest version seems to fix various power/battery issues according to Lenovo) - but this is fun - since the system doesn't see the AC Adapter plugged in, it won't let me update the BIOS, as you can't without the system seeing the AC adapter. Maddening.

Luckily, I have a dock, so I put the system in the dock, and viola, the plug appears and now the system thinks it's plugged in. So I updated the BIOS this way, but unfortuantely, upon removing from the dock and plugging back into the back, no AC adapter connected. I've tried 3 different power adapters (I have another T410 and a T400).

Any thoughts as to what it's going to take to fix this? Obviously there is POWER getting in somehow because the AC adapter DOES charge the battery, but the system refuses to see it's attached. I wonder how it thinks it's charging, LOL. I really don't like the idea of having to get a new system board.

Ideas on how to fix or what the issue could be? I *THOUGHT* I was going to like the T410 better - build quality definitely seems better than the T400, but this is now my second T410 with issues on arrival - the first was a bad Gobi card.
