External monitors for T410 - looking for recommendations

#1 Post by sqldba » Mon Mar 08, 2010 9:30 am

My T410 and external dock have finally arrived (hooray! ), now I've got to figure out which external monitors to get. I got the Advanced Mini Dock Plus (Series 3) so I can leverage the dual DVI out. I've got integrated graphics which I'm guessing impacts the max size\resoluton on the externals.

I was looking at the Samsung 2233SW (21.5"). It's got decent ratings and I can pick it up at my local Sam's Club for $165 each (http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/naviga ... pCatg=5902). My only concern is that it's a 16:9 monitor and the LCD on the T410 is 16:10. Knowing that the LCD is disabled when dual externals are attached I don't think there would be a technical issue with switching to a differnet resolution, but I'm wondering if there would be a noticeable\annoying difference in productivity\workflow. I imagine at the very least desktop icons could shift around the screen depending on which resolution I'm running.

Anybody else using dual externals with their T410? Open to all monitor suggestions even if you're not. Would like to go 20" or larger but stay at under $175 for each monitor.

We have plenty of Samsung monitors in use here, and they are decent, although I tend to find the color reproduction and viewing angles to be poor. That said, you will likely find that to be the case for most monitors in your price range. In general, I find that Dell has good quality monitors at a decent price. I would not worry about running different aspect ratios or resolutions - every Thinkpad I have seen in recent years has handled switching between them just fine.

I see that Dell has a number of nice deals going on right now. $179 for a 24" monitor, as low as $109 for a 20" monitor, and as low as $149 for a 21.5" monitor with 1920x1080 resolution. I really like this last combination of size and resolution, as I personally find two 24" monitors to be excessively large.

Thanks! Those 24" Dells are tempting but showing a 3-4 week ship time. :(

I use a Dell 30" monitor with the displayport connector. Love this at home. At work, I have two Dell 24" monitors. Also very nice.
