HD movies and T410/T400 graphics

#1 Post by JPH » Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:16 pm

How important is the discrete graphics card when playing HD movies? I have tried some 1080p mkv's on an X200 with GM4500HD as well as a T400 with ATI 3470 and another T400 with GM4500 and to be honest I did not pick up much of a difference. Any ideas, as I am about to move on to a T410 with all the tricks and as it is mainly going to be a business laptop I may drop the discrete NVS3100 for a few extra minutes battery life?

What happens when ThinkPads die after years of loyal service, do they go to heaven?

Since this hasn't been answered, I'll give it a shot. I don't play much HD content on my T400, but if what I remember is correct the integrated X4500 graphics will play HD content just fine with no problems. I don't see where the newer solution in the Calpella chipset wouldn't be enough for HD video.

In short, if you don't do any gaming, 3D modeling, or intensive CAD work the integrated T410 should do just fine.
