Migrate HD to SSD in T400

Rather than buying a whole new computer for the moderate performance increases moving from C2D to i5 (which would be basically worthless to me, since all I use my computer for is basic stuff), I'm considering moving to an SSD (Intel X-25M 80GB) and dropping the HDD into an UltraBay adapter. I'd rather not rebuild the whole computer (apps and settings--I plan on moving my docs/music/etc. using an external drive, or, alternatively, a "spare" drive in the UltraBay and repointing my Win7 libraries before swapping the boot HDD out).
I've had success upsizing HDDs using Acronis True Image before. Has anybody used True Image to clone from HDD to SDD? What results?

I do not "clone" but rather I create an Acronis image (.tib) for my backups. Cloning can have some problems, I have observed.
I am running the Intel X-25M 80GB on three T60 machines with great success. You -can-use Acronis to lay the image down on the SSD, and it will work. But the best way is to re-install Windows 7 on the SSD fresh. This is because Windows 7 will make allowances and adjustments for the unique properties of a SSD, such as Trim and alignment. Acronis does not recognize those features.
Do not mess with Prefetch or Superfetch on the solid state drive. (some silly users have come up with all sorts of odd "fixes" that are useless) The only thing to not run is defrag, and Windows 7 will by default not run defrag on the SSD.

I do run weekly .tib backups, so I could restore from there. But it sounds like I'm better off building from a clean start.
So...How the heck do I do that from my T400 recovery disks?

Assuming you are talking about "Rescue and Recovery", I am not sure how that program would react to a different hard drive being present. You could try it and see if it works. Again, problem is, R&R may not treat the SSD Trim and Alignment properly.
