T410s Discrete - Windows Experience Index Results

#1 Post by Iceman » Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:19 pm

I just received delivery on my Thinkpad T410s with discrete graphics today :D and thought I'd share my windows experience index results for those that are curious.

Processor: 6.8
Memory: 5.9
Graphics: 4.9
Gaming Graphics: 5.9
Primary Hard Disk: 7.5

I ran this test with the factory installed OS and drivers (Win7 Pro 64-bit) with the following hardware:

BS_NS512MB_I5_540M_AT (Discrete Graphics)
I5_540MX (Intel Core i5-540 Processor)
141WXGA+_LED (High Resolution Display)
UNAV_FPR (UltraNav and Fingerprint Reader)
INTEL_CUN_6300 (Intel Centrino Wireless N-6300)
WWAN Upgradable (WWAN Upgradable)
BT2 (Bluetooth)
6CELL_T400S (6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
2GB2GB_8500 (4 GB RAM)
RAMBO_UBS (DVD Recorder)
80GBSSD (Solid State Drive)
CM2 (Camera)
MDA_CRDR2 (Media Card Reader)
90W_AG Adapter (Power Adapter)

Another couple points
1. Yes, I'm lucky enough to actually have the I5-540M processor. (I called Sales and they had an option to upgrade not visible on the site)
2. For those wondering the 80GB SSD is infact the Intel G2 Drive.

Very very pleased (and lucky IMO) to have this machine in my lap at the moment.

If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to try and answer.

Thanks
Iceman

congratulation very good machine i will order one , please tell us about the machine build quality specially the palmrest creaks
is there is any creak anywhere ?
and about the processor i5-540M and the 80GB Intel SSD is it available for T410s from now on ? and why you choose the Intel 80GB over the Samsung 128GB is that for performance issues ?
the battery runtime how long the battery can stay with nVidia 512MB and the Intel HD ?
at last , any comment about the display ? brightness , viewing angles , etc... ?

waiting your answers on fire i hope that i didn't make it long on you
thank you my friend

Interesting that your memory score is only 5.9; my T510 with same CPU (and therefore same memory controller, since it's on-die) scores 6.7 for memory. I do have 8GB though, not sure if that makes a diff to the WEI numbers. Also my RAM is the faster PC3-10600 (1333MHz), but it only gets run at the regular PC3-8500 (1066MHz) rate so it really shouldn't affect the score either.
Lenovo ThinkPad T510 : i5-540M : 8GB : 500GB 7.2K: 15.6" HD+ : Intel 6300 : Win7 Pro 64 : 9Cell

To address prince_kassad's questions:

1. There is no creak anywhere on my machine. I've pushed firmly all over the palm rest and hear no creak and feel very little flex. Flex that would never be noticed under any normal usage conditions

2. The i5-540M does not appear to be an option on the Canadian or US website but nonetheless I was able to call sales and have them switch my processor option to the 540.

3. As far as I know all T410s' ordered with the 80GB SSD will get the Intel X18M G2. I chose this drive over the 128GB Samsung because a) it's faster, but mainly b) it supports TRIM (I suggest a quick read on this if you don't know what it is but essentially it prevents the performance degradation of your drive)

4. I found my battery to last ~3:40 during casual usage (web, email, etc).

5. The display brightness is impressive. I never run it at max because it's just TOO bright at that setting.
Unfortunately, viewing angles are a disappointment. My previous machine was a T42 FlexView IPS so perhaps I was spoiled by that but it's sad to see. A minor adjustment in the viewing angle washes out the image quite considerable. With that said there's not much reason for an individual user to view the machine off angle and when viewed 'head on' the results are fine.

6. (I know you didn't ask) but I thought I'd mention the only other thing that I'm a bit dissatisfied with - the sound quality. The speakers on my old T42 were better and while few laptops have good speakers it's sad to see a 5.5 year old laptop beat a new one's sound quality - all for the sake of shaving off (i'm guessing $10?) from the price of the machine.

Hope this info was helpful.

Thank you iceman!

The Aero and gaming graphics are only .1 away compared to my T410.

I'm thinking once drivers improve, so will the score.

Sounds like an awesome machine! Play Left 4 Dead 2 on it and let us know how it is!

I too received my T410s with SG on Apr. 28, but haven't had much time to use it yet :( . I can confirm Iceman's Windows experience scores. Only difference is mine has the 128SSD, which scores 6.9. It appears to be made by Toshiba according to the system information.

I can also confirm no creaks anywhere. I find it a very clean design and solid. As we know, the top is more flimsy, but the upside is that you can open it without having to hold it down with your other hand to prevent it from lifting off the surface.

Glad to see that the discrete graphics has finally made it to the t410s.

Questions - for run of the mill applications (internet browsing, word processing, etc.) would there be any benefit to the discrete graphics - such as better resolution or colors? Any benefit for Photoshop?

Coming from an X41 - anyone able to compare that screen to the t410s?

Thanks much.
Mike

I got 3:40 on the battery with mostly casual usage (docs, email, web) and a little bit of Visual Studio.
I had the display brightness set high (level 13 of 15).
Not sure how much more life could be extended out of it but if long battery life is important you should consider the ultrabay battery option.

As for the discrete graphics there would be no benefit for 'run of the mill' apps.
On the adobe site for photoshop here are two of the system requirements listed:

-1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM
-Some GPU-accelerated features require graphics support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0

So I would guess that discrete graphics would offer some noticeable performance gains.

For anyone curious I ran the Devil May Cry 4 Performance Test in Direct X10 Mode at 1280x720 and got between 25 and 54 FPS with (i'm guessing) the average to be around 40FPS.
