USB Port Clicking Sound

#1 Post by escapedturkey » Sat May 08, 2010 8:01 am

I noticed lately on my T500 the USB ports make a strange click sound when something is plugged in and moves up and down. Should I be concerned that something came loose or is this normal? I just do not want anything to break.

Thank you. :)

Clicking could be arcing or a loose capacitor. You might have the CPU whine and it may not actually be the USB?

It only happens when I physically move the USB plug up and down inside the port. 8)

Hi,

I got same situation on my very very new T500. I actually got plugged mouse only and nothing else. Its plugged all the time. I just dont use this port as people may think. When I move the plug inside I hear ugly noise just same as you.

I guess the one USB port that is alone is affected, right ?

Hmmm I dont like this and didnt expect this to happen on machine like this. Im curious if this port is soldered directly to motherboard or is on some sub assemly card.

What can we do with it ? Its really annoying.

I cant say Im happy with Lenovo. This is 2nd machine from them and of course it has some issues ...

I got 3yr IWS but service here is awful. I will just wait for it to break something so they will replace whole motherboard hmmm or maybe Ill try to find somebody who would solder this port.

Cheers,
Dissapoitned with Lenovo as always ...

Actually, if it happens to someone else that means it is probably by design. Perhaps some kind of spring mechanism?

To protect the ports I ordered some of these:

Kapsters -- http://www.rookaps.com

You may need to take them apart and re-glue / re-tape them to fit tightly but they do a great job protecting the empty USB ports.

that's crazy. call them up and get them to fix it or send you an entirely new machine. its unacceptable. its not normal no way.

No I dont but there is no spring mechanism. I'm sure of that and they do not and should not make noises.

My T400s does the same thing on the left side port. I've only notices this recently. I've also had issues with in and out connectivity that started when this clicking started.

I have to take my laptop apart soon to replace something else, I'll look into this and try to post some pics.

I can just picture breaking one of those off in there. I'm doubt dust is causing this - Its more likely from tugging on a device/cord sideways.
