[!!] Thinkpad T400 / R400 Hardware Maintence Manual Mistakes

#1 Post by Toshe » Tue May 11, 2010 1:38 pm

Recently I had to consult the official Lenovo ThinkPad T400 and R400 Hardware Maintenance Manual (5th Edition, September 2009) (HMM) - I had to replace a broken LED LCD on my T400. The procedure isn't hard but requires a lot of patience. Just to be sure and as a precaution I printed the HMM beforehand and consulted it while doing the necessary repairs.

Upon carefully following the "Removing and replacing a FRU" instructions for the different FRUs I was unfortunate to discover a few technical mistakes in the manual, which came to me by surprise and by accident while installing all the parts and units back together.

Code: Select all

page 106, chapter "1130 Keyboard bezel", Table 21: Removal steps of keyboard bezel:
For T400:
Step 1 should read: M2 x 9.5 mm, bind-head, nylon-coated (1)
Step 2 should read: M2 x 14 mm, flat-head, nylon-coated (1)
(Basically the screws for these two steps were mixed up)
If you try using the 14 mm screw in step 1 (and if you're lazy enough to use an electric screwdriver) you'll end up with a tiny hole on the other back and with a small crack on the outer housing.

Code: Select all

page 144, chapter "2070 LCD panel and LCD cable", Table 35: Removal steps of LCD panel and LCD cable (continued)
Step 4 should read Step 1
(there are no screws in step 4, I had to triple-check just to be safe)
These are just a few examples, some guy at Lenovo just didn't do his job right - so basically if you're doing any repairs to your ThinkPad be sure to double-check all the information, measure all the screws and if using them again be sure to sort them right so they don't get mixed up.

Yikes, powered driver? I've always used smaller, precision screwdrivers with laptops. The only time I take a drill with a clutch out is when I'm installing a powersupply or expansion card bracket to my desktop and thats only when I'm too lazy to find my ratcheting driver!

Don't be like EZServ and torque down, even if the HMM is wrong you should of tested it by hand tightening in the first place
