Ultrabay II vs Ultrabay III in T400s

#1 Post by pufftissue » Mon May 17, 2010 10:23 am

Hi there,

For ultrabay batteries in the T400s, do I need an ultrabay II or III? Or both? I've heard that people are using ultrabay II just fine although it does not cosmetically fit perfectly. Is this true?

I'm looking at ultrabay II: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-IBM-ThinkPad-Ad ... 4919wt_674

And for ultrabay III:

Bonus: Do I need an ultrabay II or II for using a regular 2.5" hard drive?

Thank you!

You'll want to get an Ultrabay Slim ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III for a second hard drive. I'd guess that an Ultrabay II is the correct battery. Lenovo has changed these Ultrabays so many times it is really annoying. They've literally introduced a new Ultrabay for each of the last (3) generations of Thinkpads. They're starting to employ Apple sales tactics ... and don't get me started on Docks.

Hi guys,

The outlet has these ultrabay II batteries for $43.50 shipped. (probably have to pay tax).

Is this the right one for a T400s? http://outlet.lenovo.com/accessories/ba ... y9162.html

Also, are these used batteries with many cycles on them? Does scratch and dent mean that I can't expect to get full capacity out of them?

Thanks!

These Ultrabay Lithium-Polymer batteries are notorious for consistently providing very short life spans before they drop considerably in capacity. One may get 10 or 20 cycles out of one of these packs before capacity drops to half ... and since they start with relatively low capacity, half is almost useless. [Do not expect anything like the hundreds of cycles one gets from Li-Ion battery packs.]

The "aging" problem is aggravated by the charging circuits in the Thinkpad, which force the Ultrabay battery to discharge/recharge ahead of the primary battery. This "feature" -- which cannot be modified -- stresses the Ultrabay battery maximally, contributing to its quick deterioration. All things considered, one is far better off with additional or larger primary batteries than these Ultrabay batteries.
