LG-Philips LP141WP2-TLB1 screen in T400, T410?

#1 Post by Weogo » Wed Jun 02, 2010 3:55 pm

Hi,

I have read several references to the LG-Philips LP141WP2-TLB1, with 300 nits brightness and 500:1 contrast being the best available.

It doesn't appear possible to specify this screen when ordering.

Are all the LED-backlit T400 and T410 screens with 1440x900 resolution interchangeable?

Would changing the screen void the warranty?

Thanks and good health, Weogo

Warranty: If you do everything right, it fits and you put everything back together with the torque spec being followed and don't let Lenovo know about it... It'll be fine

As for the LCD, you'd have to check if it has the proper holes drilled for the mounting rails and/or if the T410 and T400 use the same video output cable connector.

Hi Navck,

Thanks for the info!

Am checking with a screen supplier to see if the mounting holes and connectors are the same, T400~T410.
Or if there is a similar quality screen for the T410.

Thanks and good health, Weogo

Are you even sure this is an upgrade? Supposedly the LP141WP3 TLA1 is what comes in the T410... but I can find absolutely no contrast or other specifications for any of LG's LCDs, nor can I find a single hint as to what their model numbers mean. If only there were a forum for hardcore notebook mods on the interwebs :S

Hi Brad,

Screen information is indeed hard to come by!
Nothing yet from screen suppliers.

The only 1440x900 screen I found on the LG-Philips pdf is this one:

LP141WP2 1440x900 WXGA+ 16:10
250 nit 300:1 contrast. Except elsewhere on their site it says 400:1 contrast...

Thanks and good health, Weogo

How does one go about this search? Web resources/sites? Do you have to call supplier representatives directly? And/or something else?

I'm curious...
The only 1440x900 screen I found on the LG-Philips pdf is this one:
LP141WP2 1440x900 WXGA+ 16:10

Can you post a reference to said pdf?

Thanks!

Big thanks, Harryc!

Is this said parts manual (the "Parts list" section, to be exact)?
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 70069.html

Does "CTO" have any special meaning/designation for the model number?
Also:
* 6473-CTO, 48x
In this example, is "48x" the serial-number prefix?

(Haven't yet found explanations for this in the "parts manual"...sorry if I'm not RTFM-ing properly...)
Note:It is an LED backlit LCD, so it won't work unless your current T400 model is also LED backlit.
Roger that, thanks for the heads up.

Also: some have claimed that one can not "map" FRUs to model/types/serial-numbers like this because things are "made to order." But there's the manual saying differently. Maybe both sources are "right" in that some model serial-number ranges have different FRU sets...and Lenovo "maps" the right designation coming off the assembly line... or something?

'Configured to order' by the customer

hydrostarr wrote: 6473-CTO, 48x, In this example, is "48x" the serial-number prefix?
No, it's the model # prefix. So .e.g. for 6473's, you'd find this LCD on a customer configured order or on a 6473-48x. X could be 0 through 9 or A through Z.

Don't know who 'some' are, but they are wrong. You can absolutely map FRU's to specific machine type/models (most of the time, see 'note' below), but not necessarily CTO's. The specific machine type/models are standard builds. (.e.g. 6473-48X) Think about it, if a customer orders a special part (CTO), how would you know it has a particular feature/FRU unless you physically inspect the machine, look at the original invoice, or at the warranty parts list online at Lenovo?. However with a standard build, they will all have the same type of Wifi card, or LCD, or size hard drive, etc. Now with that said, Lenovo and IBM have been known to substitute part numbers for equivalent parts in the past, so you may see different FRU (or part) numbers on equivalent Wifi cards (for example) in the same models. There are so many combination's of model numbers that if you are looking for a used T400 with a high nit LCD, your best bet is to get the machine type/model number from the seller and to compare it to the so called 'tabooks', and in this case the 'ltwbook', because the T400 is a 'withdrawn' product. (no longer in production).
http://www.lenovo.com/psref/

Note: (2) things to keep in mind with the tabooks. #1, they are known to be infrequently wrong ;) . #2 is that they often make a reference like 'some may contain', or just 'some'. What they are saying is that some models in the set may have the High nit LCD (.e.g.) and some may not, so it is not an exact science. The only way to be sure (without seeing or dismantling the machine) is to get the machine type and serial # and plug it into the warranty checker online at lenovo.com, then looking at the parts list as it left the factory. Even if you do that, it doesn't mean that some seller, owner, or repair outfit didn't substitute a part during a repair or upgrade process.

My bad, I overlooked your link earlier to (what is presumably--link's not currently working) the parts manual:

Weogo,

Did you ever end up doing the swap? I have a T410s with a Samsung screen and am considering the swap if there is an overall improvement. I have found a few suppliers that have the panels for around $200.

Hi M3NTAL,

I'm still using the original screen, and am glad somebody has actually found this better screen for sale.

This thread, with the KNO double-screen unit using 14.1" IPS screens, caught my attention:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=89719

I bet THAT would be a real upgrade!
Anybody know how to get one? Is it LED or CF lit?

Thanks and good health, Weogo

I think it is LED lit based on the online info and coverage of the device.

Well, I sent them an email to their info account earlier this week requesting info on the LCD panel manufacturers and models - if they could share the info. I haven't heard anything yet, and I really would be surprised if I do. I couldn't see a phone number for them or I would have just picked up the phone.

I wish I could get an IPS screen for this machine because it is near perfect otherwise. I wish there was an option for a better screen when I configured because I would have had no problem dropping another $300-500 for a high quality screen. In a perfect world (my dreamland), the T410s would have had an option for a 14.1" 1680x1050 IPS screen, even an 1440x900 IPS would be fantastic.

I know that it's nothing like IPS but FHD screen on T510 is really worthwhile. I own both T60p with IPS screen and T510 with FHD and I used to own T400 which had Samsung lcd. T400 screen was so bad that I end up selling it. Currently I'm mostly using T510 (Photoshop, Office, some games) and although it's not perfect it's definitely good enough. It's really too bad that they are not making any T410 with FHD option I would definitely go this direction instead of buying T510.
