my 4gb is showing only as 3 gb on T400 xp sp3

I have got 2 cards of 2gb each in my memory slots.when i see memory by right clicking on my computer it
displays as 2.99 gb only.I am using 32 bit xp sp3 (the xp for which i was fleeced by lenovo by approx. 70 $).
what is it?. where 1 gb gone ? Are any setting required in thinkpad bios ?
my thinkpad is t400 wxga+ type 2765-T6U

32-bit systems can only access max 4gb of ram. See link for more info:

You need 64-bit Win 7 to future-proof your machine.
My T410 (2522-RE3) with 32-Bit Win7, I have 4 GB RAM, but it only "sees" 3 GB of it

i have my old 1gb memory boards still with me.Will i get same performance if i use 2gb + 1gb or do i lose memory even then?

It´s probably the graphic chip in your machine that uses some of the ram. Try to turn off the switchable graphics and only use your ATI chip and see what happens.

thanks yes, I had switched it to discrete only long back.
I think service centre must have mucked it up.(Lenovo,s service centre
@mumbai).
I have a xvga+ as my ccled lcd 14". I will reset it again as soon as i am through playing my sudoku rounds.
