I can answer only some...
1) Don't know
2) Installing a LED may be more difficult, involving more components that have to be replaced

4) There are some ways to cover it, I think it was discussed on the forums (or maybe I remember it from somewhere else)
5) Do you know what caused the scratch? I never used any screen protectors and never had any problems with scratches on any laptop. I find it difficult to imagine a usage pattern where a screen protector is mandatory to prevent scratches. Pressure marks from the trackpoint/keys are a different matter.
How big / noticeable is the scratch? Does it really warrant the replacement of a whole screen?
