USB drive insertion randomly causes BSOD in usbstor.sys

I've been getting a BSOD (blue screen of death) at random when I insert a USB drive into my T400 running Windows 7. The problem appears to be related to USBSTOR.SYS. I've tried updating the USB Mass Storage driver in device manager automatically, but it says I have the best version.

The problem is random in that sometimes it doesn't happen, for instance after a reboot. I suspect the BSOD is more likely to occur after the laptop has been suspended/resumed several times over the course of a week or more.

On a side note, I tried pursuing technical support through the Lenovo Thinkpad support page, only to get a "page not found" error (seen below) at the support home page. This is first page that comes up if you type in "lenovo support" in a search engine. Even if they're doing website maintenance, there should a page saying so. It continues to amaze me how poor Lenovo's websites are (both sales and support) and I'm increasingly feeling that this will be my last Thinkpad purchase.

Have you tried running the latest BIOS for the T400?

Yes. I also installed the latest Intel Chipset package from Lenovo, though this doesn't seem to affect the update of the usbstor.sys file. Thanks for the suggestion though.

The problem occurred again yesterday: I plugged a USB flash drive in fine, copied files over. Ejected and transferred those files to another system. Then on re-inserting the flash drive back into the T400 just minutes later, BSOD on usbstor.sys. Really frustrating.
