t510 from xp 32-bit to windows 7 64-bit

hi, i was given a t510 running 32-bit windows xp, and i'm thinking about upgrading it to 64-bit windows 7. what is the best way to do this?

i understand that if the windows xp license is valid, i should be able to install windows 7 from an "upgrade" version of windows 7.

i also understand that since i'm going from x32 xp to x64 windows 7, i can only do a "clean" install of windows 7 x64 (which is fine, since it's a new-to-me laptop anyway).

if i go this route, what happens to all the thinkvantage stuff, warranty info, etc. etc. that was on the laptop to begin with? is that wiped out as well? can i get that stuff back after the upgrade?

thanks

What does the COA sticker on the bottom of the laptop say as far as what OS it is licensed for?

looks like there is no COA sticker. now i have to figure out if i wanna run that little program from microsoft to see if it's genuine.

say it's not, and i get the full install of windows 7 x64. can i just install the x64 os, download the thinkvantage stuff, and have it go out and find my t510 specific drivers? and, what would happen to the warranty?

The warranty is still in effect, doesn't matter what OS is installed. I'd recommend removing the HD before sending it in for service anyway. You'll need to do a fresh install of W7 64bit, and I'd recommend that you purchase an upgrade version to so this. An OEM Version is a money saver, and if you are a student (or live under the same roof as one) the price is negligible. Once the OS is installed, also install and run Thinkvantage System update and it will install the needed drivers for you. Any other Lenovo utility can be downloaded.
