Grainy Samsung Screen on my T400
Grainy Samsung Screen on my T400
Hi Folks,
After a months-long process of getting a screen replaced (discussed extensively in a different thread), I finally got my Samsung LCD installed (LTN141BT04002). However, this one looks a lot worse than my previous Samsung. When there is a field of grey, the tones of those greys are all different - totally pixelated. You can see this a bit with other colors, but it really jumps out with the grey.
Is there any adjustment I can make (I've tried gamma stuff already)? I figure not, and that it's just the screwed up screen, and that I'll have to go back to Lenovo *again* to get a different screen put in this thing. Ugh, ugh, ugh.
See http://grove.ufl.edu/~ashenkin/temp/mottled_greys.jpg for a pic (but jeez, it's tough to take good pics of a monitor).

Re: Grainy Samsung Screen on my T400
Two guesses at what is going on:
Matte layer wasn't applied too evenly. (See: "Sparkle of colors" effect from the coating)
Backlighting is uneven (Ex. Mixed bin of LEDs)

really have no idea. i don't come up with anything with a "sparkle of colors" search.
how big are the individual led's?

If you want the LG screen, call the parts dept and see if they have them in stock before sending it to the depot. When I checked for a second T400 I had a month ago, they said it'd be a couple months before they got the LG's again.

Is the LG screen noticeably better then the Samsung?vinuneuro wrote:If you want the LG screen, call the parts dept and see if they have them in stock before sending it to the depot. When I checked for a second T400 I had a month ago, they said it'd be a couple months before they got the LG's again.
I got my T410s yesterday and the Samsung screen is horrendous.

@vinuneuro - do you have contact info for the parts department?
Re: Grainy Samsung Screen on my T400
M3NTAL the LG and Samsung are miles apart in performance quality and accuracy.
albo, sorry I can't find the part dept number. Call support and they'll give it to you.

@vinuneuro - just got off the phone, and they still don't have the LG in stock. The rep also told me they're not able to ship screens out to customers, and that they cannot specify to replace my screen with a particular part number if I send it into the depot. Does you experience contradict this? Were you able to get a hold of a particular part number?
thanks,
alex

I called a couple of days ago and was given the option of returning the laptop and ordering another one - that's it. They would not entertain swapping out the screen at all.albo wrote:@vinuneuro - just got off the phone, and they still don't have the LG in stock. On a related note, I have found the LG screen for sale online and it's around $200. What I'm not certain of is whether its an additional $200 better than the Samsung screen that I already have.

Re: Grainy Samsung Screen on my T400
A month or two back, I posted a number of times about the appalling quality of the screen on a T410s I had received, and previously on a T400s. I returned both, in both cases primarily because of the screen. Now I'm wondering whether I just had bad luck of the draw and had Samsung screens on both. At the time, the forum seemed split, with about half the folks agreeing with my scathing assessment, and half disagreeing and in some cases being extremely pleased with their screens. Now I'm wondering, do the folks who are happy with their screens have LG screens, and those who are unhappy have Samsung ones? Anyone have access to both for a side-by-side comparison?

Re: Grainy Samsung Screen on my T400
I don't know about the LED displays because my T400 has a CFFL. But, this display is made by Samsung and I'm extremely disappointed with it. I find it kinda ironic that they seem to make pretty decent desktop LCDs and HDTVs, but they can't seem to make a decent notebook LCD. I'm still debating whether to change out to the LG LED display, or go for broke and do the AFFS mod to my X200 and use that system primarily.
