Replacing HD with SDD in T410S

#1 Post by chazas » Wed Aug 25, 2010 4:09 pm

I got a smokin' deal on the T410S, which I ordered with the 250GB HD because I also got a good deal on the Lenovo 256GB SDD (42N3417).

Anyone got any good, all-in-one-place instructions as to how to change out the HD for the SDD? A few years ago I replaced the HD in my current T41 so I'm pretty sure I can manage it, but if there are any step-by-step instructions somewhere I'd really appreciate knowing.

Create your recovery cd, unscrew the bays, switch the accessory and pop the drive in. Boot the recovery cd and let it self install.. or you can clone the images

If you are asking about the hardware aspect of it, take your SSD, pretend it's a standard hard drive, and install as normal.

Later disable the pagefile if you have enough RAM.

I just replaced my harddrive in my t400s, remember your SSD will be a 1.8 form factor. I had to by a 1.8 to 2.5 adaptor so I could format the drive, once the drive was formatted I used Acronis to clone the drive.

Chazas,

You said that you "got a smokin' deal on the T410S, which I ordered with the 250GB HD because I also got a good deal on the Lenovo 256GB SDD (42N3417)."

From where? I've been looking for the same items, particularly that SSD and would love to hear where you found it for a good price. Thanks.

I got the T410S from the shareholder purchase program website - you get a big discount right away, then there was a web special configuration I started with that had another big embedded discount on top of that, then a 10% coupon was also available. The Toshiba SSD is available direct from Lenovo via the shareholder purchase program website for $639. I returned it when I realized that it doesn't support TRIM or any sort of garbage collection - they took it back no questions asked for a full refund. Instead I bought the Crucial C300 256GB 1.8" SSD which is available from Newegg for $600. My laptop hasn't arrived yet so I don't know how it will all work. Good luck!

PS: The Lenovo SSD is available for substantially less from some eBay sellers and on the marketplace here, though YMMV on the warranty.
