Turbo memory + SSD
Turbo memory + SSD
Hi!
I have a T400s with 256GB FDE SSD (Samsung, Trim works fine, 220/200MB/s).
In this T400s there is 2GB Turbo memory by default.
Question: is it worth to use it?
Afaik it is not help in the boot process as the SSD is faster than any other disk.
Can I use this 2GB for something else (instead of creating a RAM drive on it for temporary data)?
If I create a ram drive is it non-volatile?
What do you suggests? Are you using this in your notebook? May I conserve battery power by removing this form the T400s? What type of cards can I use on that place (replacing the Turbo memory with ....)?
Thanks

Re: Turbo memory + SSD
I think it'd be best to remove it. For me (and a few other people) it causes an inexplicable (now pinpointed) 12-15 second boot delay.

Re: Turbo memory + SSD
I am one of the people that is having a boot delay due to turbo memory in my T61, see post --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=89956
The only significant good that I have found with the turbo memory module installed is that the ReadyDrive (drive cache, I suppose) feature seems to permit the hard drive to stop spinning occasionally, thereby saving battery power, reducing heat and noise.
Without the turbo memory module, the hard drive never seems to stop spnning. This is my observation, I am not positive it is fact.
All that being said, with an SSD, there is no spinning or noise. In fact, in the turbo driver notes for the T400, etc., Lenovo suggests to disable the use, see quote below;

It is not recommended to use Intel Turbo Memory in a system with a SSD drive. It would be ideal to remove the Intel Turbo Memory module from the system, if SSD drive is used. Refer the hardware maintenance manual. Or set to disable Intel Turbo Memory as follows.
1.Start Intel Turbo Memory Console.
2.Uncheck "Enable Windows ReadyBoost" and "Enable Windows ReadyDrive".
