Workaround to problems with video on T410S (+other models?)

A lot of programs have terrible graphics performance on a T410S with switchable graphics on 64-bit Windows 7, even when the discrete graphics are enabled. For example, video playback in iTunes has horrible problems with dropped frames, etc. Drawing objects in Office redraw so slowly that the programs will go into the "not responding" state.
After a lot of agonizing, I've found a workaround: Disable desktop composition for the affected programs. To do this, right click on the shortcut that launches the program, go to properties -> compatibility.
This isn't a true fix -- there is something seriously wrong with the drivers which Lenovo will need to fix. When any program with "desktop composition" disabled is running, it's off for the whole system -- so you lose the snazzy Aero effects until you quit the program. But it at least the computer is usable.
Is anyone else having these troubles? Please post if this helps, or if you have any better solution!
