t410 problem

#1 Post by LodenCorp » Sat Oct 16, 2010 3:17 pm

So all of a sudden I turned my T410 on, and it makes this weird sound, kind of high pitch buzzing as if it's printing something. Then after a few seconds, it starts up. I start hearing some high pitch buzzing I don't usually hear. And now after 2 minutes, I hear nothing. Is this normal?

Uh, NO! My T410 is quiet as a church mouse. I would suspect either the fan or HDD. Try turning it on with your ear real close to the fan and HDD to see if you can determine what part of the TP the sound is coming from.

Is this behavior repeatable?
At which point in boot (or if it is the case, resume) does it exhibit the anomalous behavior?

Now I turn it on and no flaws now, no problems and no sound. What happened earlier was during the boot maybe the first 5-10 seconds, it'd make this "receipt printing" sound and the cylinder with the arrow inside of it picture right above the thinkvantage button would flickr. But now it's flawless. Weird?

That light would be the HDD activity light, no?

It might've just been one of those freak coincidences that somehow caused the drive to not spin-up properly on the first try.

well it does turn on nicely now but when I use it, I hear a high pitch sound that goes on and off constantly. I'm not sure what you call that activity light but it's the one to the right of the one with the signals. The one i'm talking about is not lit and lights up every few seconds for a quick second. I hear a high pitch whining sound from the top left of the laptop underneath. Or near that area.

I'm updating the bios right now but is there any chance or do you think they'd take it back as a return because this noise is so irritating. I really rather have my money back.

Hey LodenCorp - I thought you were selling your T410 awhile back... or is this a different one?

Mine has worked great since I first got it back in July (once I figured out some of the settings).

Yeah it's a different one, same configuration but I regret getting 4gb 1 dimm. But it was a free upgrade.

Can I ask what settings you altered?
Mine lasts 3.5-4 hours on 5 brightness and max battery on 6 cell. you?

I got the 4GB, 1-DIMM in mine (same free upgrade back in July). Why don't you like it? It works for me.

I changed the display settings from this topic: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=85851

Then, this display/power setting really drove me crazy but it's been OK since I made the change a couple days ago: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=90392

I've also had problems with the UltraNav driver: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=89879

my touchpad is working fine. I think I had a similar problem like your display. Well not really the same but mine would be really bright as in really contrasted and faded bright but slowly after few seconds fade back in to normal tones. but it rarely does that now.

Is there a way I can use finger print scanner on passwords such as email, social sites, etc.?

I get about 3 hours on my 6-cell, but I don't have the power scheme set to max battery. I typically just use mine around the house so I'm never far from an a/c outlet.

I didn't get the finger print scanner on mine. Again, the way I use the T410, I didn't have the need.

Three hours on a 6-cell? Are you running integrated or discrete?
