T410s Rescue and Recovery problems
T410s Rescue and Recovery problems
I've had no replies on the Lenovo forums, so thought I'd try here.
I have a new T410s. Partway through setting it up, I ran R&R without incident and created a backup on a USB external drive.
Some crappy software I installed wasn't uninstalling properly. I had changed out the HD for an SSD and not realized that I then needed to turn Windows restore back on for the new drive, so there was no Windows restore point for me to go back to. So I used R&R to restore. All went well.
Now R&R seems screwed up. When I try to run it it constantly identifies files that it says are "in use" or "corrupted" and prompts me to skip them or retry. Files of all kinds from the predesktop area to various other programs. They can't all be in use, and I can't babysit the thing to clear a popup every minute for the 5 hours it would take to do a backup. Also, I doubt the utility of a backup when so many files are skipped.
What did I do/am I doing wrong? Any suggestions, other than starting over again with a fresh factory install? I'm not used to doing system backups but want to be better about it - should I just ignore R&R and use Acronis or something else?

Re: T410s Rescue and Recovery problems
Depending on how R&R saves it's backups (potentially as a VHD or WIM), you might be able to forcibly extract the contents with something like 7zip, dump that onto the system drive, and set up the bootloader manually (might entail the use of a Windows 7 disc).

Yikes, thanks, Colonel, but whatever you just outlined is way too complicated for me to grasp.

Bumping, still hoping someone has some advice I can decipher. Thanks, all.

Posting to memorialize the answer.
Lenovo's chart of downloads for the T410s shows R&R 4.30.0027 as the most current version. I had 4.31, which I had found by googling.
The installation notes for 4.31 referenced a required Microsoft file, which I wasn't sure if I had. So I installed the referenced Microsoft file. No change.
I uninstalled 4.31. I then tried to install 4.30.0027 - it didn't work, I got a popup to the effect that the Rescue & Recovery area was newer, install the newer version. (I guess R&R modified something when it was installed that uninstalling didn't change.)
So I reinstalled 4.31. Had great trouble getting the download to finalize, and then to get it to the desktop out of my downloads file, but it finally worked. I installed by right-clicking with administrative privileges.
It then worked better - I didn't get a popup about a file being corrupted in use for probably 10 minutes, and they seemed fewer. And they would work when I clicked Retry rather than Skip. But the popups were still not entirely gone.
Weird how you can miss something over and over again then a quick google search will find it.
This thread on the Lenovo support forums had the final answer.

Comodo firewall interferes with R&R. If you deactivate the Defense+ function the popups will go away. The author theorizes that this function introduces a delay in the process that R&R misreads as not being able to access the file at all.

Re: T410s Rescue and Recovery problems
As long as we're talking RnR 4.31, does anyone know how it is supposed to work? I started this topic a while ago, but have no real good answer: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=91125
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
