t400s + 5300n

#1 Post by pdudas » Sat Dec 04, 2010 1:54 pm

Hi!

I just trying to make a really fast WLAN network at home.
AFAIK I need INTEL 5300n in the T400s to have the fastest possible WLAN card inside.

Is it possible? T400s and 5300n (3 antennas)?
Or is there a better (Atheros) card which works in the T400s?

Which WLAN access points do you recommend (to reach the fastest speed)? (I live in a small village, so the 40Mhz wide channel not impossible).

Thanks in advance!

All T400s should have 3 wifi antennas in the laptop, you can check easy enough, just remove the ram cover under the base of the laptop.

I did the exact upgrade you're contemplating on my 400s due to all the complaints with the 5100 and my similar experiences. Yes, the third wire is there. As a previous poster mentioned, you've got to get a 5300 card that's intended for your Think Pad (I bought mine from CDW, largely because I was much more confident that they'd allow me to return it if it didn't work properly).

I know just enough about computers to be dangerous and I found the install to be pretty painless, but you must be patient and very careful with the wiring to avoid breaking anything. I also replaced my WWAN card with the one that's intended for Verizon (in retrospect, I think they're the same card, but I didn't know that at the time), and I seem to recall that was much easier.

Now (hopefully) Lenovo will offer whatever PCI-Mini half card that's introduced for Verizon's new LTE WWAN to be used on 400s and newer ThinkPads, but I'm not counting on it.

Good luck

What's wrong with the 5100?

IMO, the 5100 takes too much power on battery. I haven't had other problems with the 5100 - the reception has been good.

However, the excess power draw isn't as bad as that one as on the F307g WWAN adapter that came with my T500.

If I don't get one of the new x series (easier on the back) I definitely will get a t4** with the 5300n.
