Thinkpad wakes up from sleep
Thinkpad wakes up from sleep
Hi,
my T410 seems to wake up from sleep at random times without any user interaction. This is especially bad when travelling and having the thinkpad in my suitcase only to find the battery drained on arrival. Anyone got an idea what could be the cause of this? I would bet its some sort of scheduled task but I havent been able to figure out what exactly is causing this behaviour.
Cheers for any advice
Vincent

I always turn my laptop off when traveling for just that reason. That said...you probably should consider adjusting some settings in Device Manager that control power management. Check your network device settings and uncheck allowing them control of power or waking up the unit.
Good luck

You may also want to try looking at the system logs and see if there's anything there that might point to what's causing the wake up. An alternative to sleep would be using hibernate mode instead.

Re: Thinkpad wakes up from sleep
Mine did this last night at 4am (woken up by a couple of windows sounds). The Windows application log shows a lot of "Task Scheduling Error" entries from Bonjour Service, and nothing else at that time. Then again, there are similar errors from Bonjour earlier in the day when the computer was in use, so I'm not absolutely sure whether Bonjour woke the machine up somehow, or whether it just took the opportunity to repreatedly fail, but I am suspicious of it now ! I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (and have iTunes 10.1.0/Quicktime installed).
The only other thing I can think of is anti-virus, I have Microsoft Security Essentials which is scheduled to run a quick scan at "Sunday, around 02:00".
I'm surprised any application is allowed to just wake the computer from sleep, but as yet don't know what's going on for sure.

MSE would not wake your machine on it's own. Look elsewhere for the issue.amardeep wrote:, I have Microsoft Security Essentials which is scheduled to run a quick scan at "Sunday, around 02:00".

You should try to disable an appropriate scheduled tasks. In "Control Panel" enter to "System and Maintenance", and then choose "Schedule tasks" under "Administrative tools".amardeep wrote:Mine did this last night at 4am (woken up by a couple of windows sounds). In the properties of each task, there is "Wake the computer to run this task" checkbox on a "Conditions" tab; make sure it is disabled everywhere.

Re: Thinkpad wakes up from sleep
Thanks Harryc and (especially) penartur. I didn't know about this bit of Windows. In Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Task Scheduler under the Conditions tab of each task is indeed a "Wake the computer to run this task". I looked at every item and the only ones with this ticked were,
Windows / Media Center / mcupdate_scheduled
status : ready
triggers : at 03:58 every day
last run : 20/12/2010 03:58
Windows / Media Center / StartRecording
status : ready
triggers : -
last run : never
TVT / LaunchRnR
status : ready
triggers : at 12:00 on last day of each month
last run : 30/11/2010 23:14
so I think we have a winner in Media Center's updater ! Runner's up prizes go to Lenovo's TVT, and to Apple for Bonjour filling the Windows application log with errors.
I've unticked the "wake ..." box for the two tasks with triggers, and since I don't think I need what Bonjour provides, have disabled that service as well for good measure. Once again, thanks for the advice.
