Add WebCam to T400s? Are they camera ready? YES.

Not all T400s models came with the webcam. However, the HMM seems to indicate that they all use the same LCD bezel and LCD cable, which would lead me to believe that the webcam upgrade is possible. According to the HMM, even the T410s models use the same LCD bezel, LCD cable and webcam part numbers. From what I can tell, all that is needed is the webcam/microphone module and the correct bezel clearplate.
Has anyone done it or have any more more info? Thanks! It seems like a simple upgrade, just swap out the microphone module for the combo microphone/webcam module and switch clearplates.

If they all have the same LCD FRU, that's a good indication that all of them have the webcam connector attached. The upgrade would need the clear plate, the webcam module, and possibly the LCD bezel as well. This looks to be a simple upgrade, though I've only done it on a T400.

Well I finally got around to performing the upgrade. Success! You just need the webcam/microphone module and the clear plate (which I'm still looking for - it really just acts as a dust cover).
As a bonus, the LCD bezel on the T400s is the most simple and easy to remove of any model ever. Just two screw covers and two screws and it pops off. Replacement is easy, too. I was afraid it'd be hard since the LCD assembly is so thin, but it turns out that it's a great design.

Harry, thanks, that is my last resort, but I may have to do it. That's $25 plus another $11.50 for shipping. I didn't pay much more than that for the webcam, so I'm hoping someone pops one out on eBay in the $5 range, like all the other webcam clear plates (X301, T500, etc.) We'll see!

Please post back if you find a clear plate.
I'm thinking of adding a webcam to my T410 and will be needing a clear plate also.

I'll probably remove the bezel first to make sure the cable is there.

By perusing the T410 HMM, it seems that all T410 models should be camera ready.
It also turns out that the camera and clear plate parts for the T410 and T400s/T410s are different.

Why am I not surprised.

Well, it only took 7 months but the T400s/T410s webcam clear plates are now available on eBay via China - for only $4.99.

Since the T400s and T410s models are all camera ready, all you need to add is the camera, clearplate and software drivers.

Too bad that won't work on a T410... the holes are reversed and appear closer together.

Does anyone know if there a difference between 42T4395 and 60Y9706 FRU numbers? The manual says 60Y9706 but supposedly 42T4395 is also a T400s/T410s webcam.
Since the T400s and T410s models are all camera ready, all you need to add is the camera, clearplate and software drivers.
I assume the scew is already there for mounting everything into place.
Also is the microphone is intergrated into the camera module in this thinkpad?

FYI, this parts seller shows the parts as the same -->

You can just reuse the screw that is holding the mic module in place. And, yes, the camera module has the dual mics, too.

Hi, I'd like to benefit of your experience of how to add a webcam to a t400s.
I have asked for an estimate at a lenovo store to add an integrated webcam to my t400s. it was 260 dollar, so I'd rather try doing it myself, even though I'm a complete newcomer to computer DIY.
Hence, I'd appreciate a lot to receive precise instructions for how to add the webcam to my t400s.
First step would be to order a webcam at a place like thinkpad-parts, partnumber is FRU 60Y9706, correct?
Nest step would be physical installation:
Looking underneath the upper part of the bezel where the camera should be added, I see three cables: two very thin white and black ones leading up to the little light, one grey and slightly thicker connecting just a centemeter right of little light to a screw which seems to hold in place the green plate (which contains the two microphones, I guess.)
Will I use any of those cables, will the camera come on a plate that replaces the current one? (what about the microphone then?)
Some posts mention the need to order a new camera lid cover. In my case, the bezel seems to have wholes for the webcam already in place, they are simpley covered by a black sticker on the outside of the bezel. It seems to me that it would be possible to simply cut the necessary wholes into the sticker and put it back on
Finally, once the webcam is physically installed, I will probably have to install drivers, will they be delivered with the webcam?
I'm grateful for your feedback and precise instructions! Thanks so much
Uli
