Replacing the screen on T510?

#1 Post by davepol » Tue Dec 28, 2010 11:57 am

Hi, I ordered my T510 with FHD screen. The colors are nice although viewing angles could be better. However since the resolution is so high everything is painfully small. I've seen some replacement screens on ebay and I was wondering is it possible to replace the screen for the one with lower resolution?
I checked lenovo website and it seems like inverter (LED board) and the cable (motherboard --> lcd) are the same for any T510 so I guess it should work just fine?
Any input highly appreciated!
Thanks,

If you're using Vista or Win7, you can increase the DPI setting (on Vista it could be adjusted by right-click on desktop, "Personalize", "Adjust DPI settings"). It will make all fonts larger.

If your machine is under warranty, replacing the LCD could affect the status. You need to make sure you are getting the right size (15.6" vs. 15.4") and that you are buying one with the correct interface. You need an LCD backlight screen. The one you need uses an LCD interface board and not an inverter. An inverter converts DC to AC to drive a CCFL

Thanks for valuable advice. However it's almost out of warranty (1 year) anyway. I'm planning to get it from screencountry.com. They have T510 on the list so I guess it's the right one. I hope that all the other parts are compatible.
The screen is only $63 so I guess it's worth to try. I will post the results :)
thanks!

Why not adjust the DPI as Penartur has suggested? If you're running Vista or Windows 7, it works quite well. My guess would be the screen from screencountry is going to be a step down from what you've got now quality wise.

I ordered a glossy screen, although I know it won't be popular on this forum
They already shipped it so I guess I will try. However I did adjust dpi and it works great, thanks Penartur!
Many thanks!

There is no point in trying.
That's like throwing out an expensive 1200DPI laser printer in order to purchase old dot matrix printer just because someone set up in word 6pt default font size, and the letters appear too small on laser printer, while they are of fixed size on dot matrix printer. Right solution would be not to replace the printer but to increase default font size.

I concur; the RGBLED panel is nice spec-wise. The HD+ had marginally better viewing angles though, but I'd rather have the resolution.

Yup I changed dpi and its perfect right now. However the screen is already coming and I think I will try to swap them, then take few photos and then swap them back. If it accepts this "new" screen it will probably accept variety of other screens. I don't think FHD is RGBLED though...maybe it is, I don't know? I though I got the best screen there is for T510 (FHD) I didn't know that HD+ had better viewing angles :(

Forum reports say marginally better.

Opening up your lid does void your warranty, so be wary of that.
