FRU 42T0825 (atheros 802.11n card) on T500

#1 Post by comps » Thu Jan 27, 2011 3:28 pm

Hello,
I'd like to buy an Atheros-based 802.11n (a/b/g/n) card for my Thinkpad T500. Unfortunatelly, I can't find any other FRU than 42T0825, which is for "older" (R60/T60/...) thinkpads. This card should - in theory - work with newer thinkpads as well, as the bus is still the same (miniPCI express), but no official lenovo page / tech support guy is able to confirm that.

Therefore, I would like to ask, if somebody has tried an older FRU/WLAN card on a newer thinkpad with original BIOS. I have pretty bad experience with modified BIOS flashing (though I have one prepared for T500 if everything else fails), so I would like to avoid that.

In case you wonder why - ask Intel about AP mode on Wifi Link 5300 in their WONTFIX thread.

Thanks for any comments / suggestions.

The only similar case I know of is here:
(Japanese) http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/ar ... 38933.html
(Google Translated English) http://translate.google.com/translate?u ... &ie=EUC-JP

In short, he tries to put a 4965AGN in an X200 but gets the 1802 error.

EDIT:
Connectify works fine with my 5300. What exactly do you mean by the AP issue?

Thanks for the info, ... well, I guess I'll just order it and use the modified bios if it doesn't work. Therefore a list of people, who successfully flashed Zender's 3.09 (based on 6FET79WW) BIOS on T500 with discrete graphics, would be way too useful ;)

Sorry, I forgot to mention it's a "bug" in iwlwifi/iwlagn linux driver, the windows one might support it. The exact issue is http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/ ... gi?id=1585 . It appears to be ASSIGNED, though there's no noticeable progress as far as I'm concerned.

One more thing that crossed my mind - will those cards be physically compatible? Will the atheros one fit into T500?

Since I have pretty much zero experience when it comes to mini-PCI express cards and their dimensions, I would like to ask if there are any size-based "classes" or "types" of slots/adapters when it comes to WLAN cards.

I know that ie. mini-PCIe flash-based SSD is too large to fit the WWAN slot, but that's about it.

Thanks.
