what keeps T510 from utilizing PC3-10600 RAM?

i'm trying to figure out if there is any FRU upgrade of my T510 that can fully utilize PC3-10600 at speed.

from what i can tell, the fastest cpu i can put in my T510 (which has integrated graphics) is an i7-640M, which, according to intel can only utilze RAM at PC3-8500 speeds.

i assume an i7-2620M (which can utilize the faster RAM) won't fit into a T510 not originally fitted with that latest generation cpu?

if there is no way to get PC3-10600 to work, then i might as well just get PC3-8500 RAM....

maximum memory speed is determined by the processor.

out of curiosity, what are you doing with your system that you need faster memory?

well, nothing that i know of really. i understand that in real life use you almost never notice any difference in RAM speed if specs are anywhere near close, i'm just planning possible upgrade paths. crucial has (when it's in stock) pc3-10600 and pc3-8500 for the same price. i'd get the pc3-10600 if i thought i could ever utilize the extra speed. i think the only way would be if the latest crop of i7 mobile processors can fit in my older t510.

does anyone know if, say, an i7-2620M would fit a 4313-28u?

Sandy Bridge and Arrandale sockets are different.

even though your system can't use it, get the faster memory if it's the same price.

i have 8GB worth of 1333MHz memory in my X200T simply because it was the same price and will work in future 1333MHz systems at native speed.   for now it downclocks gracefully to 1067MHz.

fwiw, my thinkstation has 667MHz memory yet calculates worlds faster than any thinkpad i've owned.   memory speed is usually the last place to try and find a gain.
