new T510--windows 7--ultimate. (1) Where are there controls to set preferences for the top row of buttons above the UltraNav touchpad? i can adjust left and right button options, but no options are shown for the top row of buttons.

(2) also, when i hold down the top left button and move the pointer (like to move a scroll up or to move a text box around), sometimes i have to slide my finger on the pad several times to get the pointer to move. i know the problem isnt in the ultranav preferences (like the palmcheck etc etc), because i have them set to move with a lite touch etc--also, when i hold down the BOTTOM left button instead, i can easily move the pointer every time with a lite slide of my finger on the pad.

thx,
jeff

The buttons you refer to belong to the trackpoint, not the touchpad :)

thanks, but i can't find any controls or preferences for the top 2 outer buttons for the trackpoint--all the preferences relate to the red trackpoint button or the top center button.

help?

thx,
jeff

The only changes you can make to those outside 2 buttons is to swap their function.

Go to Mouse Properties and select the Buttons tab. In the Button configuration section, check the box to Switch primary and secondary buttons. Doing this will switch the function on both an external mouse (I have a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000) and the TrackPoint. It does not change the function of the TouchPad buttons.

well, that's a drag.... The top bottoms are conveniently located for me, but they won't drag the pointer until i slide my finger on the touchpad 2-3 times, whereas the bottom left button immediately picks up the sliding finger.

oh well.

much thanks, Gary.

You might try re-installing the current Ultranav driver or updating to the current driver. On my T410, if I hold down the left TrackPoint button and move the TrackPoint, it highlights and selects any text I drag it across. Same result as with a mouse if I hold the left mouse button and drag the mouse around.

Try turning down PalmCheck to the fourth level from the left. This alleviates a somewhat similar issue for me.

thanks guys, but i tried all the palmcheck and other techniques. Really, i can use the lower lefthand button fine as a drop n drag. it's the upper lefthand button that i have to slide my finger on the touchpad 2-3 times before it moves the mouse. the lower lefthand button moves it immediately. strange issue...

Yeah the TrackPoint buttons override the touchpad unless PalmCheck is less than or equal to the fourth slider. You'll find that otherwise, moving the TrackPoint with your left hand while trying to swipe the touchpad with your right hand shows that the TrackPoint takes precedence. Likewise, typing temporarily locks out the touchpad as well.

What if you tried installing the drivers from Synaptics instead of the UltraNav branded ones?

i have palmcheck set to the next-to-last hash mark on the left (almost to minimum). i found that setting it to the very last hash mark on the left allowed the best mouse movement, but also resulted in the pointer jumping around from unintended touches. i'd be typing a sentence and suddenly i was typing the sentence in the middle of a previous sentence several lines above.

switching to synaptics drivers is an interesting idea--have you tried that?

thx,
j

I personally have not, as I use the TrackPoint almost exclusively. It does install for a friend with a T510 who complained about a similar issue where the touchpad would not respond during or immediately after a keystroke (kinda makes it to play a first person shooter on a touchpad :P). Haven't heard back though.
