HELP! T510 W7 64bit clean install - Ethernet issues!!!!!

#1 Post by Investinwaffles » Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:07 pm

Help me guys, I just got a brand new T510 in my office, with 4gb of ram, and my office ordered it with 32bit Windows 7.
We have Windows 7 64bit Enterprise volume licenced so I loaded it up on the thinkpad only to find that the default Windows drivers dont pick up the Intel ethernet card.

No problem, went to the Lenovo website and downloaded he 64 bit drivers, installed them and downloaded System Update. It is then that I notice that the ethernet card will keep cycling off every 10 seconds or whenever you go to actually access anything through the network!
The computer is unusable in this state, everything times out (updates, even google chrome) constantly because literally every 10 seconds it will cycle on/off.

I have been trying for 2 days to get this issue straightened out to no avail! It works perfectly with the default Lenovo image, and I have tried 3 clean 64 bit installs to no avail.
Installed/uninstalled drivers and the network card, tried different drivers, tried 32 bit drivers, tried installing Access connections (which i do not want), and nothing will fix this issue. I have pretty much given up :help:

Also, when I watch the lights on the network card the lights go dark exactly when Windows reports that the network card is disconnecting.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I need to use this computer tomorrow and I absolutely must be on wired ethernet!

Hi there
......we have approx 12 W510 + same for T510 ... ALL of them Run Win7x64 Enterprise
Not once we have had any issue wth Enthernet ( we all use Gigbit networkall around.

If you go to DEVICE MANAGER , > do UNINSTALL DRIVER > reboot ....
after rboot , (after reboot it will ask for drivers as it will find new hardware - just cancel - dont install that time..........
than go to DEVICE MANGER > and DISABLE the card ; and than ENABLE it.
( it will ask for drivers again . dont install it)

Download NEW DRIVER , and SAVE IT to a FOLDER ........from LENOVO WEBSITE

Than use MANUAL INSTALL - ie , double click on the downloaded file... and folllow steps to install
( than you MUST REBOOT _ BEFORE USE)

Hope these steps helps - good luck

Cheers

Restore it to the 32-bit preload for now so you have a usable computer. Shrink the partition to half size and install your 64-bit Enterprise version to a seperate partition so you can diagnose it while having a usable OS when you need to.

You could try downloading the driver straight from Intel.

Thanks for the help, but it is doing the exact same thing :(

When you say
Than use MANUAL INSTALL - ie , double click on the downloaded file... and folllow steps to install
( than you MUST REBOOT _ BEFORE USE)
The lenovo drivers unzip to an Intel installer, do you mean use the "intel" installer? or use the windows "find driver" function?

I tried doing it both ways and no change :(
Ill try the OEM intel drivers now and see. Otherwise its probably going to have to be returned and re-ordered

The preload also has the issue? Could it be that there's an idle timeout that's being triggered for the device? I know that, sometimes, Access Connections would power off the wireless radio after five minutes.

Try an Ubuntu LiveUSB environment to see if it's an OS agnostic issue.

The factory 32bit image has been working perfectly for the past few days. I kind of gave up on getting the Ethernet working, after trying 30 different install tricks. Kind of sucks that I cant use all of the ram in the system, but it beats not being able to use the internet :o

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. Im going to get my office to just order me a 64bit restore CD set and hope that works.

if you icannt use Ethernet port from x64
might be hardware issue .......or else ??

x64 restore Dvd = will do same nearly proicess of install as x32 , and then the drivers are 'updated' in windows + system update...

with all the x64 thinkpads I have had over years (nearly all of them since XpPro = 64 but) as we NEVER USED x32 - due to dual boot with REDHAT or SUSE workstation.
Never ahd any issues with Ethernet - am 1000000% sure of this - had lots of issues with Video/Display during Lenovo debarcle with 'switchable graphics' .....

Even my personal latops have OSX (snow L) never had 'ethernet' issues ( unless its hardware!

maybe best to RETURN to FACTORY and get x64 OS from factory ...since you have that choice now (x64bit is generally 0$)

Cheers

Indeed, it sounds like a hardware issue. Send it back.
